Poster Session with Novartis!

We worked with a team at Novartis Institute for Biomedical Research (NIBR) to set up a poster session for BU graduate students onsite at Novartis in the summer of 2019. It was a fantastic opportunity to present research and get feedback from industry professionals. The poster session was followed by a networking reception.

Chemistry Piano and Museum of Science!

Members of the Beeler lab and some BUWIC members have worked hard on the Chemistry themed “Play me I’m Yours” piano now at the museum of science!

BUWIC Volunteers at SET in the City!

BUWIC members volunteered at SET in the City's Science Bazaar!  We did a really cool elephant toothepaste demo (hydrogen peroxide and potassium iodide).  See pictures below and the awesome video of the demo here!

 

Alternative Career Panel Event with BUSEBG!

This is a reminder for a special BUWIC/BUSEBG (BU Science and Engineering Business Group) event on alternative careers for scientists. A Wine and Cheese Social will follow (21+ only).

Our panelists will give a brief introduction about themselves, what they are currently doing and how they got there. The floor will be opened to questions to allow for a dynamic and helpful discussion.

Lunch Q&A with Prof. Ashley Stevens!

Please join BUWIC this Monday February 3rd at 12pm in LSE 103 for a lunch talk with Prof. Ashley Stevens.  Dr. Ashley Stevens received his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the University of Oxford.  He was a product manager at Procter & Gamble before moving in to the biotechnology sector, working for Biotechnica and Genmap. Dr. Stevens then took a position as the Director of the Office of Technology Transfer at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. He then took that same role at Boston University, and is now a lecturer in the School of Management for a Graduate level course entitled “Bench to Bedside: Biomedical Innovation”.  Dr. Stevens is also currently the President of Focus IP Group, LLC.

As always, lunch will be provided.

Please join BUWIC this Thursday, January 30th at 12pm in LSEB 1004 for a lunch seminar with Dr. June Lum.  Dr. Lum is a graduate from the Doerrer Group at BU and is now a postdoctoral research associate at the U.S. Army Natick-Soldier Research, Development, and Engineering Center. June will discuss the search for a post-doc following graduation and the details of her current position.  We encourage all interested grad students, post-docs, and faculty/staff to attend.  As always, lunch will be provided.

Lunch Q&A with Dr. Diane Joseph-McCarthy!

Please join BUWIC tomorrow October 16, 2013 at 12 pm in SCI 512 for a lunch seminar with Diane Joseph-McCarthy.  Diane is the Vice President of Chemistry and Computational Science at EnBiotix Inc, an engineered antibiotics company co-founded by Boston University and Apeiron Partners LLC with a focus on developing and commercializing antibacterial and antifungal discoveries.  She will be giving a short career path and research talk with time after for questions.  As always, lunch will be provided.

Vertex Conference Support

This is an announcement that applications are currently being accepted for conference support to grad students and post-docs!  The funding is available to BUWIC members presenting at regional or national meetings.  Thanks to funding from Vertex Pharmaceuticals, BUWIC will reimburse up to $200 in registration fees.

Interested BUWIC members can download the application at our website: http://chemhelp.bu.edu/buwic/resources/.  All applications received by November 1st,  2013 will be reviewed together, and on a rolling basis after that for allocation of remaining funds. Five awards will be granted in the fall, and five additional awards will be granted in the spring.
