BUWIC hosted a lunch seminar on June 10th, 2016 with new organic professor Malika Jeffries El!
Dr. Jeffries-EL's research focuses on the development of organic semiconductors–materials that combine the processing properties of polymers with the electronic properties of semiconductors. She has authored over 30 publications, received over 1200 citations and given over 75 lectures domestically and abroad. She has won numerous awards including the NSF CAREER award (2009), the ISU- College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Diversity Award (2011), the ACS-Women Chemist Committee Rising Star award (2012) and the Iota Sigma Pi Agnes Fay Morgan Award (2013).

BUWIC hosted a lunch seminar on Wednesday, April 27th, 2016 with our invited colloquium speaker Judith Klinman from the University of California, Berkeley (group page here)!
Dr. Klinman earned her A.B. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1962 and her PhD also from the University of Pennsylvania in 1966. She was then a postdoctoral fellow at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel. Dr. Klinman then worked as a research scientist at the Institute for Cancer Research in Philadelphia, PA from 1968-1978. She was then appointed as the first female faculty member in the chemistry department at the University of California, Berkeley.
The 2015-2016 Colloquium Series continues Wednesday at 4:00pm with Prof. Judith Klinman the University of California, Berkeley. She will be speaking on:
Trying to "Crack the Code" of Enzyme Catalysis"

BUWIC hosted an awesome lunch seminar with Gunther Kern, founder of Kern, Consulting LLC on Friday, April 8, 2016. Thank you, Gunther!
Gunther received his Ph.D. in Biophysics at the University of Regensburg, Germany, after which he came to the US to work as a scientist at Astra Research Center, followed by a position at AstraZeneca. Most recently he has received his MBA and founded Kern, Consulting LLC.

BUWIC hosted an awesome lunch seminar with Joanne Kamens, the Executive Director of Addgene, on Wednesday, January 6, 2016. Thank you, Joanne!
Dr. Kamens is the Executive Director of Addgene, a mission driven, non-profit dedicated to helping scientists around the world share plasmid reagents. She was a University of Pennsylvania undergrad and received her PhD in Genetics from Harvard Medical School, then spent 15 years at BASF/Abbott. In 2007 she joined RXi Pharmaceuticals as Senior Director of Research Collaborations. Dr. Kamens founded the current Boston chapter of the Association for Women in Science and has served on numerous other boards. In 2010, Dr. Kamens received the Catalyst Award from the Science Club for Girls for longstanding dedication to empowering women in STEM and in 2013 she became a Fellow of the Massachusetts Academy of Science recognizing scientific accomplishment and service to the science community. In 2013, she was named one of PharmaVoice's 100 Most Inspiring Commanders & Chiefs.

BUWIC hosted an awesome lunch seminar with Jill Becker, CEO and Founder of 02139 Inc. on Friday, November 6, 2015. Thank you, Jill!
Currently, Dr. Becker is CEO and Founder of 02139 Inc, a consulting company she started in 2013 in order to provide executive consulting services and investment advice to both public and private companies with a heavy focus on accelerating growth and the creation of jobs in a variety of industries.
Prior to that, Dr. Becker was CEO and Founder of Cambridge NanoTech Inc., a company she started back in 2003 straight from her PhD thesis at Harvard University. Under her leadership, the company was instantly profitable and operated at a profit every year since then and was one of the fastest growing private companies for numerous years in the US from 2008-2012 until it was sold to Ultratech Inc., a public semiconductor company.

Ms. Varanasi is an accomplished business executive, with 20 years of biopharmaceutical industry experience. She currently runs her own strategy and business/corporate development consulting practice in the biopharmaceutical sector. Over her career, she has held research and senior level positions in Business & Corporate Development at several pharmaceutical companies.
