James Borders
Principal Investigator
James Borders is the Principal Investigator of the Airway Protection Research Lab (est. 2025). He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences with a joint appointment in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Boston University. He completed his PhD and postdoctoral training in Communication Sciences and Disorders at Columbia University. Dr. Borders studies impairments of the upper airway, including swallowing, coughing, and breathing dysfunction, and their impact on health and quality of life. His interdisciplinary, translational research program integrates principles of causal inference, meta-science, and statistical modeling, with a strong commitment to open science.
Dr. Borders teaches the undergraduate SAR SH325 Speech Science course. He also teaches the Research Methods course and an Advanced Dysphagia seminar for BU’s Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology program.
