Who we are looking for:

  • Volunteers over the age of 18 years with no history of swallowing or cough disorders and no history of neurological disease, head and neck cancer, or stroke.
  • Volunteers with a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease.

You may be asked to:

  • Produce speech
  • Produce a cough on command
  • Breathe a sensory stimulus that may or may not make you cough
  • Swallow food or liquid

The following types of data may be collected:

  • Acoustics via a microphone
  • Airflow while wearing a facemask
  • Body movements from your chest muscles and muscles from the surface of your skin
  • Brain activity measured from a cap that uses light and sensors

Swallowing Therapy

The Boston University Academic Speech, Language, & Hearing Center offers swallowing therapy! Our expert swallowing clinician is Rachael Kammer. If you have been diagnosed with a swallowing problem (dysphagia) or if you have problems with swallowing or speech because of Parkinson’s disease, please contact us for more information.

From the main entrance, the elevator is to your left. Proceed to the 3rd floor.
Follow the one-way signs to your left and around one turn. We are located on your right at the end of the hallway.

Convenient access is available via the MBTA:

  • Green Line “B” branch to Blandford St. stop
  • #57 bus (inbound): Commonwealth Ave. at Silber Way
  • #57 bus (outbound): Commonwealth Ave. at Hinsdale Mall

On-street parking is available on the streets surrounding the lab.
