BTEC X BMES Design-A-Thon
General Information
We are excited to announce that BU BMES is collaborating with BTEC to create our second year-long Design-A-Thon 2023-2024!
Students will have the opportunity to work with a graduate student mentor and utilize BTEC resources to bring their project to life and compete for a chance to win a prize! Regardless of the outcome, this is a great opportunity to work on a long-term project, gain leadership experience, and form connections with graduate students and industry partners.
Important Dates
- Kick-Off Meeting: September 28th, 2023 – 6:30-7 PM in BTEC 201
- Initial Ideas Due: October 26, 2023**
- Project Proposal Presentations: December 9th, 2023
- Project Check-in: March 21st, 2024 – 5:00-7:00 PM in ERB 203
- Registration for Final Presentation: April 13th, 2024
- Final Project Presentations/ Banquet: April 27th, 2024 – 12PM in LSE B03

The Challenge
This competition is focused on challenges around healthcare disparities for underrepresented minorities and low-income communities and how diversity considerations incorporated into design can enhance the quality of a product.
Student projects should amplify a sense of the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion and convey it to the larger community within an engineering design context.
Categories:
1. Data Science, Precision, & Predictive Medicine
2. Molecular & Tissue Engineering, & Drug Delivery
3. Biosensors, Medical Devices, & Diagnostics

The Prizes
3 first place prizes:
$1000 for each category
$100 for each winning-team graduate student
$250 student choice award
Eligibility and Registration
Teams should contain 2-5 members. At least one student per group must be in the College of Engineering.
Initial ideas are due no later than 11:59 PM on October 26, 2023.

For Competitors
Each team will have a $250 budget for supplies that must be ordered through BTEC.

Please note that we cannot grant reimbursements for purchases so please be sure to submit all requests for supplies through the form. Orders may take about 2 weeks to arrive so please plan accordingly
Safety Trainings
To use all of the BTEC, SILab, and EPIC spaces, you must have the proper safety training. These must be completed prior to Initial Project Submission
