Activities in the Bifano Research Laboratory focus on design, manufacturing, and use of optical instruments. One focus is on shaping light using deformable mirrors (DMs). Our lab pioneered development DMs that improve resolution in telescopes, microscopes, and ophthalmoscopes, and that allow modulation of optical wavefronts for communication and beam forming. These are now commercialized by Boston Micromachines Corporation.
We also do work on biomedical imaging applications and microscopy. Professor Bifano is PI of the Neurophotonics Research Training Grant at BU, and is a Thrust Leader for the Engineering Research Center on Cellular Metamaterials. In that project, we are trying to engineer heart tissues for cardiac repair. Our lab leads the Imaging thrust for this large team effort.
