Lab Members
Konstantinos (Kostas) Alysandratos, MD, PhD
Assistant Professor of Medicine
Section of Pulmonary, Allergy, Sleep & Critical Care Medicine, Department of Medicine
Center for Regenerative Medicine (CReM)
Boston University and Boston Medical Center
Kostas is a principal investigator in the Center for Regenerative Medicine (CReM) at Boston University and Boston Medical Center. He is also a Pulmonary and Critical Care attending in the Pulmonary, Allergy, Sleep & Critical Care Medicine Section of Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. Kostas obtained his MD and PhD degrees from the University of Athens in Greece. He completed his internal medicine residency training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, TX followed by fellowships in Sleep Medicine and Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine at Boston University. During his fellowship, he trained in Dr. Darrell Kotton’s laboratory at a time when reliable preclinical human disease models of pulmonary fibrosis were lacking. This inspired him to develop an iPSC platform for modeling the alveolar epithelial cell dysfunction at the inception of pulmonary fibrosis. Closely partnered with his research interests, Kostas co-leads the interstitial lung disease clinical program at Boston Medical Center where he is an attending pulmonologist.

Kathleen Mills, PhD
Post-Doctoral Fellow
kmill11@bu.edu
Kathleen is a postdoctoral associate in the Alysandratos lab, co-mentored by Darrell Kotton. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Chicago. In 2025, she completed her PhD in Immunology and Microbial Pathogenesis from Cornell University/Memorial Sloan Kettering, where she studied the pulmonary immune response to the opportunistic fungal pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus. Her interest in lung epithelial cells led her to the CReM, where she is using patient-derived iPSC models to study genetic determinants of pulmonary fibrosis, with a particular emphasis on telomere-related gene variants. Outside the lab, she enjoys hiking, cooking, classical music (playing and listening!), and exploring New England.
Vishal Gupta, PhD
Post-Doctoral Fellow
vishalk@bu.edu
Vishal obtained his PhD degree in Bioengineering from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, India, where he worked on engineering 3D hydrogel culture systems to model Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in vitro. He is excited by interdisciplinary research and is interested in modeling various interstitial lung diseases using iPSC-derived cell lineages to find new therapeutics. His non-academic interests include playing field hockey, trekking, off-road biking, and exploring new cuisines.

Jonathan Chang, MD
Post-Doctoral Fellow
jlchang@bu.edu
Jonathan attended medical school at Duke University School of Medicine and received his Masters in Public Health at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He completed an internal medicine residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and is now a pulmonary fellow at Boston University / Boston Medical Center. He is interested in interstitial lung disease and pursuing a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms at play in fibrotic lung disease. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with family and traveling.

Porter Dooley
Grad Student, PhD Candidate
porterd@bu.edu
Porter is PhD student in the department of Molecular and Translational Medicine. Before attending Boston University, she received her B.S. in Biology at Northeastern University. Her thesis work focuses on using patient-derived induced alveolar type 2 cells to study the convergence theory of pulmonary fibrosis. In her free time, Porter enjoys running, drawing and spending time with friends & family.
Diya Gopal
Lab Manager, Research Technician
dgopal1@bu.edu
Diya received her BS In Cell and Molecular Biology from Northeastern University. She is now a lab manager/technician in the Alysandratos Lab. She plans to pursue a MS in Biology during her time at Boston University. In her free time, Diyaenjoys drawing, reading, and spending time with friends & family.

Angelica Lorenzo
Lab Manager, Clinical Study Coordinator
alorenzo@bu.edu
Angelica is a Clinical Study Coordinator supporting the biobanking of patient samples and data from individuals with interstitial lung disease (ILD). She is originally from Chicago and received her BS in Biomedical Engineering from Yale University. She will attend medical school in the future. In her free time, Angelica enjoys playing music, traveling, and staying active.
