Hiring Postdoctoral Associates & Visiting Researchers

Reminders:

  • Please contact Robyn as soon as you’re thinking of hiring a researcher or appointing a visitor to join your research program.
  • Appointments that require J-visas require at least 3 months’ notice.
  • Appointments that require H1-B visas require at least 6 months’ notice.
  • There are new federal requirements that dictate minimum funding requirements for various research groups. Please speak with Robyn prior to making any commitments to prospective hires.

Postdoctoral Associates

Definition

An individual who has received a doctoral degree or equivalent and is engaged in a temporary and defined period of mentored scholarly development or research. Typically an entry-level compensated postgraduate appointment. (Please note: a Senior Postdoc has at least 3 years of postgraduate experience).

Needed for hire

  • CV
  • 3 letters of recommendation
  • Memo addressed to the Chair, which must include:
    • length of appointment (start and end dates)
    • salary
    • the research that will be conducted

Needed for reappointment

  • CV
  • Annual Research Appraisal
  • Memo addressed to the Chair, which must include:
    • length of appointment (start and end dates)
    • salary
    • the research that will be conducted

Visiting Researchers

Definition

An uncompensated member of the University community who participates in and contributes to its research programs and scholarly projects.

Needed for hire & reappointment

  • CV
  • Memo addressed to the Chair, which must include:
    • length of appointment (start and end dates)
    • the research that will be conducted
