Ground rules in operating instruments
- If you do not know how it works, do not operate it.
- If you make a mess, you clean it.
- If you damage the instrument or the instrument is not working, report it immediately and fix it or get help repairing it.
- If it is not your sample, do not touch it.
- If your colleague is using the instrument, check back at another time.
- If you need a specific time to use the instrument, reserve a time on the calendar.
- If you will leave while the instrument is running a test, leave a note with the instrument.
General principles in operating instruments
- Analyze potential hazards during operating an instrument/tool and use proper PPE.
- Understand what you are going to acquire.
- Understand what information the instrument can give you.
- Understand how the instrument/tool functions.
- Get necessary training.
- Check the status of the instrument, e.g. air, gas, electricity, water, computer, consumable.
- Use “common sense” and Practice, practice, and practice.
Qualified User System in biomaterials lab
- Lab instruments are open for use 24/7 for qualified users.
- Qualified users can reserve and use instruments any time.
- Non-qualified users can use instruments with the assistance and supervision of a qualified user with a notice to lab staff and faculty.
- Beginning users can only use the instruments in normal working hours.
- Disqualified users cannot operate instrument on their own at any time.
- Following equipment is under control of quanlified user system : SU6600 FESEM and EDS, Instron 5566A, all high temperature furnaces, diamond section machine Isomet 5000, polishing machine Ecomet 250/Automet 250.
