Foreman, who is still enrolled at Boston University in the College of Arts and Sciences, has played the last two seasons as a guard on the team, starting in 54 of 59 games since 2015.

The split has been described as amicable between Foreman and BU basketball, as the junior is walking away from the sport because he no longer wishes to play, sources said. Foreman did not respond to three separate attempts for comment from WTBU Sports. Men’s basketball later confirmed Foreman’s departure when asked for comment.

“Kyle is a great kid who chose to leave the team in good standing and will continue to study at BU,” said head basketball coach Joe Jones in an official statement provided to WTBU Sports. “We wish him the best.”

Last season as a sophomore, Foreman led the Terriers with 136 assists – good for fifth best in the Patriot League. Eric Fanning, who was second on the team in assists in 2016-2017, totaled 67. Foreman’s team-high 4.5 assists per game average was ranked 83rd in Division I last year, while his 1.9 steals per game average – the second highest for BU – was tied for third most in the conference. He finished the season with 57 steals in total.

With his departure, the Terriers will be without their top-two leaders in assists from a season ago. Senior Eric Johnson now returns with the most helpers from last year, totaling 54 assists in 27 games. And while senior Cedric Hankerson led the team with 61 steals in 2016-2017, Foreman’s absence means that sophomore Tyler Scanlon will return with the second-most steals from last year. Scanlon grabbed 33 in his rookie campaign.

Foreman leaving also means that Andrew Petcash, a 6-foot-4-inch guard from Pittsburgh, Penn., will join the team as a freshman, according to Boston University Athletics.

As a freshman in 2016, Foreman was named to the Patriot League All-Rookie Team after finishing first in the league among freshman in steals with 34. He also was just the third freshman in Patriot League history – and the first since the 1997-1998 season – to win back-to-back Rookie of the Week Awards. Foreman won the weekly honor four times as a freshman, including in the third and fourth weeks of November.

In his debut as a Terrier in 2015, Foreman posted 15 points, the most for a BU rookie in an opener since 2006. He also tallied seven assists, a high for a BU rookie in an opener in at least 20 years, according to Boston University Athletics.

Before BU, Foreman was the No. 6 ranked player in Washington state, according to ESPN.com. At his alma mater, Bellevue High School, Foreman started all four years and was named team captain for his junior and senior seasons.

Reporter Matt Doherty also contributed to this report.
