The No.19 Terriers looked as if they were going to extend their winning streak early on, but were ultimately unable to hold on, losing the game by a score of 3-1.

As has been the case all season, BU’s defense continued to look strong in the first half. Junior goalkeeper Kathleen Keegan stopped the only shot sent her way, generating her tenth save of the season.

On the other end of the field it was Kiley Gallagher who found the back of the net for BU. The sophomore midfielder took the ball up herself on the right side of the turf and sent one past Albany goalkeeper Melissa Nealon in the 25th minute. Gallagher’s first collegiate goal sent the Terriers into the locker room at halftime with a 1-0 lead.

But half number two proved to be a different story.

The Great Danes of Albany earned five corners in the second half (a total of six for the game). With BU’s freshman Millie Baker in goal, Albany turned up their offensive urgency, and taking advantage of their corner situations, converted three into points.

First, forward Katie MacCallum snuck one past Baker in the 48th minute to knot the game up at one a piece. The game was not tied for long, as less than two minutes later a corner shot by defender Frederike Helmke off a pass from midfielder Dana Bozek zipped in to give the Danes the lead.

BU struggled offensively in this second half, something we haven’t seen much in the early stages of this season. While the Terriers could not find another point all game, Albany’s Helmke scored her second goal in the 67th minute, once again thanks to a pass from Bozek.

The Terriers did not go down without a fight however, launching four shots in the final minutes, but unable to convert on any. BU finished with an 11-7 shot advantage but only earned one corner compared to Albany’s six.

The 3-1 loss comes on the third installment of a five game road trip for BU, the longest the Terriers will face all the season. BU looks to bounce back on Sunday, Sept. 10 during a 1 p.m. showdown against the 3-2 UMass Amherst Minutewomen.

By Andrew Mason BU Field Hockey dropped its first game of the season Friday afternoon after squaring off against No. 21 University of Albany on the road.
