Basketball: BU Bests American For 9th Win of the Season

By: Eric Getzoff

In their most impressive victory of the season, the BU women’s basketball team upset the American University Eagles at Case gym Wednesday night, 71-62 for their second win in as many games.

Senior captain Sarah Hope led the Terriers in scoring with 24 points, with 18 of those coming in the second half. She connected on four of eight three-point attempts, and was successful on 8-of-9 free-throw attempts, with seven of those free-throws coming in the final 36 seconds of play.

Hope was helped by the play of Corrine Williams, who, in her third game back from a four-game absence due to an injury, scored 14 points on only four shots from the field. Her aggressive play down low helped her get to the line a season-high eight times, with Williams making six of those attempts.

The score was tight throughout, with the largest lead being a 26-19 BU advantage with 5:56 remaining in the second period. But American fought back to the end the first half, cutting the BU lead to one heading into halftime.

The third quarter was tight throughout, as BU only outscored American by one point, 16-15.

The Terriers didn’t take over the game until 3:59 remaining in the fourth quarter when Corrine Williams’ layup put the Terriers up two, and gave them a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Hope and Williams combined for 16 of BU’s final 18 points, which gave the Terriers their first winning streak since early January, and tied the 2013-2014 team for the most conference wins since joining the Patriot League starting with that season.

“We got some good stops especially at the end of the game,” said head coach Katy Steading. “It was mostly our mental game that impressed me down the stretch. We were focused we were determined. We got good stops and that’s what it takes to win games.”

BU held American to 35% (21-60) shooting in the game, while the Terriers connected on 49% of their shots (25-51).

“American is such a good team,” said Steading. “They’re so talented and so disciplined and so tenacious that it makes our job really difficult. We really worked hard trying to stay with them person to person.”

The Terriers sit in fifth-place in the Patriot League and trail American and Army by one game for third place. They have a two-game cushion on sixth-place Loyola Maryland, who the Terriers will play this Saturday at 2 p.m. in Baltimore.

By: Eric Getzoff In their most impressive victory of the season, the BU women’s basketball team upset the American
