Women\u2019s Basketball: Terriers Lose Fourth Straight Game Against Loyola Maryland<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Boston University\u2019s Women\u2019s Basketball (7-16, 3-9 PL) lost their sixteenth game of the season, 49-40, against the Loyola Maryland Greyhounds (10-13, 6-6 PL) in Baltimore, Maryland, on Saturday afternoon.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe really locked in on taking away their post players and lead scorers. We just really struggled to score the ball,\u201d BU Head Coach Melissa Graves said.<\/span><\/p>\n

BU won the tip, but Loyola\u2019s heavy man defense led to a missed Adler jump shot. Loyola\u2019s Lex Therien rebounded it from just below the hoop, which added one more rebound to her career total, making her the all-time Patriot League leader in rebounds at 1198.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With a kick to the corner through the crowded paint, Loyola freshman Sydney Bass shot a three to start the scoring off for the game. Against Semenova\u2019s height, Loyola found some difficulty scoring down low. However, Loyola was able to strip the ball from her after she gained an offensive rebound. A poorly timed trap from the Terriers then led to an open corner three from Olivia Shaughnessy, giving the Greyhounds a 10-0 lead and forcing a BU timeout.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Junior guard Bella McLaughlin drove hard to the basket and was fouled, missing both free throws, which kept BU off the scoreboard in the first five minutes of game time. They finally scored their first points a few possessions later with a feed down low to Allison Schwertner, who towered over her matchup at 6’5.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With great ball movement and patient shot selection, another corner three from Bass dropped in. After a couple back-and-forth plays, Terrier In\u00e9s Monteagudo Pardo also found success through a drive-in and midrange shot. Taking advantage of the double team, Anastasiia Semenova dropped to the open block and made the layup. At the end of the first quarter, the Greyhounds led 13-6 in points, as well as 11-6 for total rebounds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Loyola\u2019s strength did not waver going into the second quarter. With Gabby Betton ripping the ball away from two Terriers as she fell to the floor, she passed it out to Therien, who quickly scored. BU responded with controlled passes and a midrange shot from Monteagudo Pardo for the first points in the second quarter. While being guarded by two players in the paint, Semenova drove down the baseline for a reverse layup, cutting the lead down to five, the smallest lead over the past eight minutes of game time. McLaughlin brought energy into the game as she checked in, finishing strong through the contact.<\/span><\/p>\n

In an attempt to set a screen, a hit by Greyhound Whitley Watkins above the shoulders of Semenova was officially reviewed and decided to be a flagrant one, in which Semenova made both free throws. A backdoor cut and layup by Amandine Amorich broke a shooting drought for Loyola. In their next possession, she rolled the ball in for her fifth and sixth points of the game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

BU quickly answered with a driving layup from McLaughlin, two free throws from Kate Allard, and a defender-splitting move from Audrey Ericksen, cutting the lead to one point. However, the Greyhounds beat the buzzer with a jumpshot to bring the halftime score to 23-20.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the second quarter, both teams had eight points off the bench. They also both had eight points in the paint. BU had four steals in the second half but went zero for five from the three-point line. Loyola, however, made three out of eight 3-pointers and only logged one steal.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both teams were slow to begin the third quarter. After four made Greyhound free throws, Loyola dropped to 38% from the field and BU stayed at under 30%, halfway through the third quarter. However, the Greyhounds turned their defense into offense, with Bass scoring a three in transition. They went on a 9-0 run and forced another Terrier timeout. A bounce pass to Allard then led to the first BU basket, six minutes and 15 seconds into the second half.<\/span><\/p>\n

Amorich splashed in a three-pointer, making her the first out of all the players to reach double figures. Two shots in the paint and a free throw from Semenova brought the Terrier\u2019s final third-quarter point total to seven and the overall game score to 38-27.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the fourth quarter, McLaughlin was open in the corner due to miscommunication from the defense, and she hit the first three-pointer of the game for BU. Their previous inability to make a three was a main reason for their offensive difficulties, as the Terriers typically rely heavily on their outstanding shooting behind the arc. They are ranked second in the league for three-point percentage. Monteagudo Pardo added another three-pointer in the next possession. BU and Loyola traded points in the paint for four possessions, with the last one being scored by Adler, her first points of the game despite being the Terrier\u2019s leading scorer. However, Amorich hit a three and practically sealed the game as the Greyhounds went up by 12. McLaughlin scored another tough layup, but the Terriers ended the game with a 49-40 loss.<\/span><\/p>\n

Amorich ended with 14 points, her first double-digit game since the last time Loyola played BU. Therien finished the game with six points and is ranked 9th in the Patriot League for all-time points scored. Semenova led the Terriers with 13 points and was the only player on the team in the double digits.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cJust finding our rhythm offensively, we just didn\u2019t get there tonight,\u201d BU Head Coach Melissa Graves said.<\/span><\/p>\n
