This is probably the best way to describe seeing the indie pop duo, Electric Guest, perform at the Sinclair for the first time in over five years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As fans trickled into The Sinclair in Cambridge on February 5th, feelings of intrigue spread throughout the venue as hopeful fans attempted to figure out what to expect from the 2010s indie-pop royalty, who had just months earlier reemerged from a half-decade hiatus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortly after the most charismatic act in all of music, SNACKTIME, finished their opening set with a funk and jazz cover of \u201cTeenage Dirtbag,\u201d the most anticipated question of the evening loomed over the venue: What will Electric Guest play?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a question that seems simple for most bands. However, for Electric Guest, a band with an abrupt ascent to stardom, a prolonged hiatus, and an even more abrupt reboot, it\u2019s a question with an unclear answer.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/wtbu\/files\/2026\/02\/DSC_6358.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"6016\" height=\"4016\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-52670\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/wtbu\/files\/2026\/02\/DSC_6358.jpg 6016w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/wtbu\/files\/2026\/02\/DSC_6358-636x425.jpg 636w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/wtbu\/files\/2026\/02\/DSC_6358-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/wtbu\/files\/2026\/02\/DSC_6358-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/wtbu\/files\/2026\/02\/DSC_6358-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/wtbu\/files\/2026\/02\/DSC_6358-2048x1367.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 6016px) 100vw, 6016px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After forming in 2011, Electric Guest was quick to find commercial success with their first studio album \u201cMondo.\u201d Within a series of months the group went from thinking about forming a band to having an album chart at the top 50 in both the U.S. and U.K.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the years that followed, the success grew into multiple global tours, late night appearances, and a popular follow-up single, \u201cDear To Me,\u201d releasing in 2016.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following year, Electric Guest\u2019s sophomore album, \u201cPlural,\u201d faced slower commercial success. Despite featuring their second most streamed song, \u201cOh Devil,\u201d the album failed to chart outside the U.S. and the tour was cut back to only 40 domestic shows.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point, the group started to move in different directions. Lead vocalist Asa Taccone found success in writing the Grammy-winning\u00a0 \u201cFeel It Still\u201d with Portugal. The Man.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/wtbu\/files\/2026\/02\/DSC_6408-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"6016\" height=\"4016\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-52671\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/wtbu\/files\/2026\/02\/DSC_6408-2.jpg 6016w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/wtbu\/files\/2026\/02\/DSC_6408-2-636x425.jpg 636w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/wtbu\/files\/2026\/02\/DSC_6408-2-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/wtbu\/files\/2026\/02\/DSC_6408-2-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/wtbu\/files\/2026\/02\/DSC_6408-2-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/wtbu\/files\/2026\/02\/DSC_6408-2-2048x1367.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 6016px) 100vw, 6016px\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 2019, popularity for the group had seemingly dried up as their third studio album \u201cKIN\u201d failed to chart and the following 2020 tour, pre-pandemic, was condensed to 15 shows at smaller venues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortly after the \u201cKIN Tour\u201d, the group went into a deep hiatus with no new music or touring announcements in the following years. This is a period that Asa Taccone was very reflective on in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/wtbu\/2026\/02\/01\/interview-electric-guest\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our WTBU interview<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prior to their performance at The Sinclair.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After five years of complete radio silence, the band abruptly reemerged this October to announce a tour in support of their new, fully independent album \u201c10K.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though most fans likely remember Electric Guest for the commercial hits they made at the height of their popularity in the mid 2010s, it was not clear what direction the band wanted to go in with the \u201c10K Tour.\u201d Was this going to be a complete reboot or a recollection of the band&#8217;s success from the 2010s? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/wtbu\/files\/2026\/02\/DSC_6762.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"6016\" height=\"4016\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-52672\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/wtbu\/files\/2026\/02\/DSC_6762.jpg 6016w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/wtbu\/files\/2026\/02\/DSC_6762-636x425.jpg 636w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/wtbu\/files\/2026\/02\/DSC_6762-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/wtbu\/files\/2026\/02\/DSC_6762-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/wtbu\/files\/2026\/02\/DSC_6762-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/wtbu\/files\/2026\/02\/DSC_6762-2048x1367.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 6016px) 100vw, 6016px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the second the band took the stage, after a man in a bear costume concluded an oddly touching monologue on the troubled state of the world, it was clear that the performance would\u00a0 be a blend of both.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than capitalize on nostalgia or bury the past, Taccone and Electric Guest seemed more interested in remaining as present and transparent with their fans as possible. To this end, they played a mixture of newer releases and some of their older classics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout the show, Taccone took several moments to reflect on the burnout the group faced during the months prior to the pandemic.
