{"id":47740,"date":"2025-04-10T02:43:42","date_gmt":"2025-04-10T06:43:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/wtbu\/?p=47740"},"modified":"2025-04-10T02:44:13","modified_gmt":"2025-04-10T06:44:13","slug":"softball-terriers-edges-bc-in-battle-of-comm-ave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/wtbu\/2025\/04\/10\/softball-terriers-edges-bc-in-battle-of-comm-ave\/","title":{"rendered":"Softball: Terriers Edges BC in Battle of Comm Ave"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By Abigail Stocker<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NEWTON, Mass. \u2013 The Boston University Softball Team (26-11) dominated Boston College (17-19) in the Battle of Commonwealth Avenue with a 3-1 victory Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe started a little bit slow \u2026 but I was just really impressed with seeing the game through,\u201d BU Head Coach Ashley Waters said. \u201cWe picked it up and played a little bit sharper, a little bit better as the game went.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leading the charge for the Terriers was junior pitcher Kasey Ricard, who struck out six and allowed just four hits and a single unearned run in seven innings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ricard, who reached 600 career strikeouts earlier this season, was the difference-maker in the pitchers\u2019 battle with Eagles\u2019 pitcher Kelly Colleran.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s always a great win to obviously beat a rival team that&#8217;s two miles down the road,\u201d Waters said. \u201cIt&#8217;s also always a great win to have a midweek ACC team that plays really high caliber.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Eagles struck first in the opening frame. After a two-out walk to infielder Emma Jackson, a fielder\u2019s choice brought her home to give BC a 1-0 lead. Ricard rebounded by closing out the inning with a strikeout.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BU struggled to capitalize early, leaving two runners stranded in both the second and third innings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Junior infielder Megan Coyle<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">junior<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outfielder<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aimee Metz<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reached<\/span><b>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but BC\u2019s defense shut down the Terriers without a run.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both teams were quiet in the second inning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ricard<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continued to keep BC at bay, striking out outfielder Jordan Stephens and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forcing outfielder Kali Case to ground out.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colleran<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">responded by sending the Terriers down in order, and the game remained 1-0 in the Eagles&#8217; favor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The third inning provided the Terriers with another scoring chance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sophomore outfielder Kylie Doherty<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reached on a walk, and Coyle<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">followed with a single, putting runners on second and third base with one out. Still, the Terriers could not push through the Eagle&#8217;s defense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ricard continued to lord it over at the bottom of the third inning, sending Eagles in succession back to the box.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both offenses stayed quiet through the fourth, but the Terriers\u2019 bats came alive in the fifth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After sophomore infielder Libby Walsh reached on a fielder&#8217;s choice, Coyle singled to put runners on the corners.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With two outs, junior pitcher Olivia Delong stepped up with a game-tying RBI single to left field, scoring Walsh to make it 1-1.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sixth inning turned into a showcase for both pitchers. Ricard remained dominant, retiring the side in order and preserving the tie.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colleran responded with a solid inning of her own, though she surrendered a solo shot to BU freshman catcher Addie Lucier. Ricard<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was able to keep the Eagles at bay, producing two further flyouts and a strikeout.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the top of the seventh, BU grabbed its first lead. With two outs and a runner on first base, Doherty delivered the knockout blow, launching a 3-1 pitch off the center field fence for a two-run homer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the bottom of the seventh, BC threatened with a leadoff single by infielder Janis Espinoza, but Ricard<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remained composed, retiring the next three batters to secure the win.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe second that we took the lead \u2026 Kasey knew that she was going to find a way to execute and finish the job,\u201d Waters said. \u201cI\u2019m really impressed with how she finished the seventh by just executing her pitches and getting some easy outs.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Terriers now return to home turf after a five-game road trip.
