Simrit<\/a>\u00a0grew up in the southern United States, but her sound is settled deeply in her Greek Orthodox heritage; she was born in Greece before being adopted and moving to the U.S. Her recently released,\u00a0Songs of Resilience<\/i>\u00a0(September 30, 2016), exemplifies this, with its steady beats and melodic vocals.\u00a0Songs of Resilience<\/i>\u00a0is a beautiful mix of many cultures, with Simrit pulling influence from everything from her yoga practice (evident in \u201cAd Such\u201d) to West African folk music (\u201cNana\u201d is a reframing of an old Manding song) that she learned from a member of her ensemble, Salif Bamakora, an American kora player. Along with a kora, Simrit\u2019s ensemble includes a cellist and a percussionist to round out her performance.
