{"id":32892,"date":"2022-09-21T10:50:27","date_gmt":"2022-09-21T14:50:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/wtbu\/?p=32892"},"modified":"2022-09-21T11:19:35","modified_gmt":"2022-09-21T15:19:35","slug":"boston-film-festivals-38th-run-confronts-environmental-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/wtbu\/2022\/09\/21\/boston-film-festivals-38th-run-confronts-environmental-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"38th Boston Film Festival confronts environmental issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"38th Boston Film Festival confronts environmental issues by wtbu\" width=\"500\" height=\"400\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?visual=true&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F1348213534&#038;show_artwork=true&#038;maxheight=750&#038;maxwidth=500\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>By Melissa Ellin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boston Film Festival will tackle environmental justice in its 38th run with a five-day slate of in-person and virtual screenings starting Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eight in-person screenings will take place between Thursday and Saturday at various locations in and around Boston, while digital programming is available starting at 4 p.m. Thursday and ending at 11:59 p.m. Monday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BFF Executive Director Robin Dawson urged people to support the festival, highlighting the limited seating for pandemic concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a sa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fe way to come and engage,\u201d Dawson said. \u201cIt\u2019s connecting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year\u2019s event will kick off with Director and Actress Olivia Wilde\u2019s much anticipated \u201cDon\u2019t Worry Darling,\u201d starring Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Chris Pine and others. It will play at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Regal Fenway on Park Drive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the first time, BFF will dedicate part of Friday to comedy. Dawson said it\u2019s important to combat the heavy issues the world faces today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBetween t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he war in Ukraine, the pandemic, losing so many people, the environment, it\u2019s time for us to laugh a little bit and relieve some of that stress,\u201d Dawson said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Massachusetts native Court Crandall\u2019s film \u201cBromates\u201d will headline the night of laughs, with a screening at The Wilbur Theatre in downtown Boston at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The comedy follows two recently single best friends who move in together for support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crandall said he pushed for his film to show at The Wilbur because it has around 800 total seats. While such a large audience might \u201calmost create an anti-film festival experience,\u201d Crandall said, he wanted to reach a wide group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s nothing wrong with film festivals, but if it was a little bigger and a little more rowdy, that wouldn\u2019t be th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e worst thing in the world,\u201d Crandall said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film also ties into the festival\u2019s themes of environmental stewardship, Crandall said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s probably even more subtle than \u2018Don\u2019t Look Up,\u2019 but it\u2019s there,\u201d Crandall said. \u201cI think if people are laughing and talking about an issue, it\u2019s a lot better than fighting over it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the same night and time as \u201cBromates,\u201d Director Ashley Avis\u2019 documentary \u201cWild Beauty: Mustang Spirit of the West\u201d makes its East Coast debut at the Rockport Music-Shalin Lie Performance Center. The film follows Avis\u2019 multi-year exploration of wild horse endangerment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite its immediacy, Avis said few people know about this issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur film is about wild horses, but the greater theme is about protecting our wild world,\u201d Avis said. \u201cProtecting not only horses but wolves, and mountain lions, and coyotes and all these other species that allow our w<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">orld and our planet to stay in balance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avis said she while people cannot experience the great American west as she did, a big screening like BFF\u2019s can help bring it to life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSeeing all of that varied topography, and seeing the salt flats, and the sand dunes, and the mountains and the lush forests of Oregon,\u201d Avis said. \u201cFilm festivals like Boston are really important to be able to have that true immersive experience. That is moviemaking.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of Avis\u2019 favorite memories from filming, she said was a night in Sand Wash Basin when hundreds of wild horses appeared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was stallions fighting, and it was babies running around and noses with their family members,\u201d Avis said. \u201cIt w<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as really special\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outside of documentaries and comedies, the festival will include short films, a true crime drama and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following in-person screenings, there will be a Q&amp;A with directors and actors, which Daw<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">son said she is most excited about this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt can be a rare experience that is not easily accessed if you don\u2019t live in the area,\u201d Dawson said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tickets to live shows and digital access information are available on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bostonfilmfestival.org\/live-in-person-screenings\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the festival\u2019s website.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Melissa Ellin Boston Film Festival will tackle environmental justice in its 38th run with a five-day slate of in-person and virtual screenings starting Thursday.
