Weimar was the Terriers’ leading scorer and rebounder against American University Saturday. HANNAH YOSHINAGA/ WTBU SPORTS

By Hannah Yoshinaga

Boston University women’s basketball (7-7, 3-0 PL) routed American University (8-4, 1-1 PL) Saturday, stifling the conference’s fourth-ranked offense in the 69-46 win.

Sophomore center Caitlin Weimar led BU in scoring with 16 points, 18 rebounds and four blocks, all of which are career bests for Weimar at BU. The performance was also her second double-double in the last three games.

Weimar helped give the Terriers an advantage on the boards all afternoon, where they outrebounded American 49-33.

Junior guard Sydney Johnson, the Terriers’ leading scorer this season, also picked up the offense with 13 points and six assists. Despite shooting only 25% from the field, freshman guard Alex Giannaros continued her hot streak with 11 points and three assists.

In the opening frame, BU held American to just 10 points on 25% shooting. Weimar dominated early in the paint, scoring 12 of BU’s 18 points.

The troubles on the offensive end continued for the Eagles in the second quarter when they scored only eight points. They shot just 27.6% in the first half, going 1-for-8 from deep.

American was able to turn it around in the third, outscoring BU 17-16 even though it continued to struggle from deep with one of six shots made from beyond the arc.

However, it wasn’t enough as the Terriers continued their dominance in the fourth period, scoring 21 points to American’s 11 on 75% shooting. BU went primarily with a bench lineup to close the quarter, and every player on BU’s active roster got into the game by the time the final buzzer sounded.

46 points is a season-low for any Terriers opponent, as well as a season-low for the American offense. Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year Jade Edwards was not immune to the Eagles’ offensive struggles, finishing with 10 points after failing to score in the first quarter and going 1-for-8 during the first half.

Other than Edwards and senior forward Taylor Brown, who led with 15 points, no player on American’s roster scored more than six points all afternoon.

The win was the Terriers’ third straight versus the Eagles, dating back to the 2019-20 season. BU has not lost to American on its home floor since Jan. 23, 2019, when the Eagles came away with a 64-51 victory.

The Terriers take the floor again on Wednesday when they face Army at Case Gym.
