{"id":29291,"date":"2021-12-03T23:46:36","date_gmt":"2021-12-04T04:46:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/wtbu\/?p=29291"},"modified":"2021-12-05T12:14:53","modified_gmt":"2021-12-05T17:14:53","slug":"mens-hockey-leadership-breaks-through-lifts-terriers-over-unh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/wtbu\/2021\/12\/03\/mens-hockey-leadership-breaks-through-lifts-terriers-over-unh\/","title":{"rendered":"Men&#8217;s Hockey: Cockerill breaks through, lifts Terriers over UNH"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><i>By Patrick Donnelly<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Senior captain Logan Cockerill scored the game-deciding goal, his first of the season, during the second period in a 3-1 win for Boston University against the University of New Hampshire at Agganis Arena on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Junior foward Wilmer Skoog and graduate assistant captain Max Kaufman also scored for the Terriers (5-9-2, 4-5-2 HE), and sophomore forward Dylan Peterson had two assists. Seven different BU skaters recorded at least a point. Sophomore goaltender Drew Commesso made 29 saves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIt\u2019s nice to win a hockey game. I\u2019m really happy with the team&#8217;s effort,\u201d BU head coach Albie O\u2019Connell said. \u201cOur leaders were tremendous. &#8230; We&#8217;ve been kind of banging the drum that we have to play harder defensively, and I thought we played a really good defensive game.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Junior forward Harrison Blaisdell scored for the Wildcats (7-8-1, 3-6-1 HE). Senior goaltender Mike Robinson made 31 saves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI thought both teams played hard,\u201d UNH head coach Mike Souza said. \u201cI thought we took some ill-advised penalties. \u2026 We had a couple passengers tonight, which is uncharacteristic of us. \u2026 It\u2019s hard to win hockey games if you only score one goal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Blaisdell gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead at 5:02 of the first with a sharp-angle shot from the bottom of the left face-off circle.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Here&#39;s Blaisdell&#39;s early goal for UNH. Perfect shot-pass from Matt Brown right on Skoog&#39;s tape, and he redirects it past Robinson. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/snmKO268Ve\">pic.twitter.com\/snmKO268Ve<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Patrick Donnelly (@PatDonn12) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PatDonn12\/status\/1466939577244221440?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 4, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Junior defenseman Vlasic <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PatDonn12\/status\/1466945939529101315?s=20\">almost gave the Terriers a 2-1 lead<\/a> at 3:11 of the second after making a move at the blue line and shooting off the far post and in, but the goal was called back after Skoog made contact with Robinson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI don\u2019t think [Vlasic] is going to give Skoog a Christmas gift,\u201d O\u2019Connell said,\u201d but [the officials] made the right calls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">At 11:35, UNH freshman forward Liam Devlin got a five-minute major and game misconduct for slew-footing BU freshman forward Brian Carrabes. After the penalty occurred, the next stoppage in play was not until the 14:03 mark, but the Terriers successfully challenged the play.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Here is the play that got UNH&#39;s Liam Devlin a five-minute major and game misconduct for slew-footing. The next whistle wasn&#39;t until 5:57, and BU successfully challenged the play. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zkUXmpxLjK\">pic.twitter.com\/zkUXmpxLjK<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Patrick Donnelly (@PatDonn12) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PatDonn12\/status\/1466956230983708675?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 4, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cOur guys on the bench were like \u2018that was a slew-foot,\u2019\u201d O\u2019Connell said. \u201cDoug Friedman has the headset, so he called upstairs to Jon Sherman our video coach, and he made the right call, the call of the year. \u2026 That was a big one, and it really gave us an opportunity to win the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Souza was confident the officials made the right call.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWhen I saw it in real time, I wasn\u2019t sure if it was a slew-foot or not,\u201d Souza said. \u201cI\u2019ve got a lot of respect for [referees] Jeremy [Tufts] and Marty [Hughes]. I think if they had the chance to look at it on video, I\u2019m sure they got the call right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Cockerill scored at 13:17 on the ensuing power play. Sophomore forward Dylan Peterson tried to deke in the slot, and the puck bounced right to Cockerill at the side of the net. It\u2019s going to come at some point. It has to.\u2019 It did tonight, and it felt really good.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>O&#8217;Connell said Cockerill capitalizing on the major penalty was the turning point of the game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIt\u2019s great to see [Cockerill] score,&#8221; O&#8217;Connell said. &#8220;He&#8217;s been working so hard. There\u2019s a lot of pressure to be the captain here. He wears a lot of hats in the locker room, but he\u2019s also worried about playing his own game. He&#8217;s had plenty of chances. \u2026 I\u2019m hoping that can loosen him up a little bit. I&#8217;m really happy for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Kaufman <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PatDonn12\/status\/1466955824275009542?s=20\">nearly gave BU a 3-1 lead<\/a> at 17:09, redirecting Vlasic&#8217;s wrist shot, but UNH successfully challenged for offside.\u00a0He did, however, score his first of the season with an empty-net goal at 19:32 of the third after blocking a shot in the defensive zone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cIt\u2019s nice to see [Kaufman and Cockerill] score, and get a couple breaks going their way,\u201d O\u2019Connell said. \u201cWe did a great job blocking shots. That was a major factor in the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">BU will travel to the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H., tomorrow night for a rematch with the Wildcats.
