CHESTNUT HILL, Massachusetts — Alex Carpenter netted her seventeenth goal of the season in overtime to thwart the Terriers comeback bid, 4-3.<\/p>\n

All hope seemed lost after 20 minutes. BU was once again trailing BC by two goals. Alex Carpenter scored just past one minute and Dana Trivigno added to the lead after 16 minutes. For the second stratight game, the Terriers went into the first intermission trailing the Eagles.<\/p>\n

Head coach Brian Durocher regrouped his team for the second period and they played with an elevated battle level.<\/p>\n

“It was right in front of our goalie, it was in the mid-slot, it was on the back-check. It was also on the fact that we didn’t go crazy forchecking… You have to [create turnovers] by frustrating them” coach Durocher said.<\/p>\n

It took a five-on-three power play, but Sarah Steele blistered one by BC goalie Katie Burt to halve the lead. Just over five minutes later, Maddie Elia scored her eighth goal of the season off a feed from Rebecca Russo to tie the game.<\/p>\n

The Eagles responded with the drop of the puck in the third with Kristyn Capizzano finding the puck after a scramble in front. The goal marked her fourth on the season and the 23rd third period goal for BC all season.<\/p>\n

Rebecca Leslie’s forecheck generated a turnover, which she then passed to Russo. Russo pulled the puck back, then pushed it forward, then tucked it behind Burt for the tying goal. It was Russo’s fifth on the year and only the eighth third period goal allowed by BC all year.<\/p>\n

“That was probably the payoff of playing well for the last five minutes of the first, the entire second, and most of the third” coach Durocher said.<\/p>\n

Junior goalie Victoria Hanson, starting in net for the first time since allowing six goals in two periods to Northeastern on October 24th, made 40 saves overall and 14 in the third period to keep BU in the game.<\/p>\n

“I think she kept the game simple. She wasn’t over moving, she wasn’t being too anxious or too technical. I thought she played big tonight; gave us a chance with some big saves” coach Durocher said.<\/p>\n

The BU penalty kill “played it pretty conservative” to coach Durocher and killed all three BC power plays on the night.<\/p>\n

“Just because we had sticks in the lane, they were trying to thread some needles and maybe passes were just a little too hard to handle.”<\/p>\n

To start overtime, Hanson again made two back-to-back saves in the opening minute. But a BU turnover that found Haley Skarupa’s stick made it’s way to Alex Carpenter, the leading goal scorer in the country, and made no mistake to win the game for the Eagles, 4-3.<\/p>\n

“We’re not playing for moral victories…It’s a night you want to get out of it with one point if not two.”<\/p>\n

BU now falls to 6-6-0 (4-3-0 Hockey East) and BC continues its unbeaten season at 11-0-0 (6-0-0 Hockey East).<\/p>\n

This weekend, the Terriers host the University of Maine Black Bears in a weekend series of afternoon games. Maine will come into this weekend nearly identical to BU in record at 6-6-0 overall, 3-4-0 Hockey East.<\/p>\n

This month, Maine is 1-2-0; after losing two straight against Vermont and Northeastern, the Black Bears defeated Dartmouth on the road, 4-1. BU defeated Maine in the second game of the season, 4-2, in Orono. This weekend series will wrap up the season series between BU and Maine.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
