Women’s Basketball: Terriers lose first game of the season to Army

After a rather tumultuous start to their season, the BU Women’s Basketball team lost their first game this season in a series against Army West Point this past weekend, accepting defeat on Sunday afternoon 54-43.

BU had been on a pace that’s hard to slow, and they just beat Army on Saturday 59 – 45 on Saturday.

The usual duo of Katie Nelson and Sydney Johnson stepped up once again to try to lead BU with 9 points apiece, and found support from freshman Maggie Pina who put up 8 points herself.

Riley Child continues to impress as well having an outstanding 10 rebounds in Sunday’s contest.

Despite these efforts and the Terriers coming out hot to start scoring 13 points in the first quarter, they struggled in the second and third quarters scoring a measly 10 points combined. Although BU came back stronger in the fourth, scoring 20 points, Army maintained the lead.

It was Army’s consistency on the boards and ability to find strength in BU’s weaknesses on defense that ultimately led them to bring down the Terriers.

West Point juniors Sarah Bohn and Alisa Fallon played 72 minutes combined and tallied just under half the team’s points (23). Out of the other seven Army players who found their way on the court Sunday, only 3 did not score.

This was no easy victory in the slightest. Army has a history of stacking up personal fouls against BU, which has lead to faulty advances in their overall play. On Sunday they managed an outstanding 17 personal fouls, yet it was nothing compared to the Terrier’s 22.

West Point was able to turn the tables on BU yesterday evening, disrupting the steady rhythm of play they had begun to build this season.

The Terriers will get a week off of gameplay as their contests against Lafayette on January 23rd and 24th were canceled.

Come January 30th at 1 p.m. BU will tip-off against the Holy Cross Crusaders, who they beat at the start of the month twice. This matchup will be a time for correcting mistakes and reestablishing momentum.
