Boston University announces no fans at hockey, basketball games

In a “Letter to Terrier Nation” on Thursday, Boston University announced that spectators will not be permitted at any BU ice hockey or basketball games this season.

“While we are disappointed to share this news with our loyal and supportive fans, this decision is an important step in continuing to provide a healthy environment for our student-athletes, and our entire BU community,” the email, signed by athletic director Drew Marrochello, reads.

The BU basketball teams have yet to announce a schedule, though ESPN and other sources reported in October that the Patriot League would not tip off until 2021 at the earliest. On the ice, no word has come on a timetable for the season’s start.

This was somewhat addressed in the email: “We are in continuous conversations with the Patriot League and Hockey East about our delayed season schedules and our teams are eagerly awaiting their return to competition on the court and ice. We will share more details as the schedules are finalized.”

BU Athletics pointed to CBS for its hockey coverage this winter and ESPN+ for basketball broadcasts.

This story will be updated with more information as it comes.
