Men’s Lacrosse Pulls Upset, Advances in Patriot League Tournament

Trailing 11-6 with under five minutes to play in the third quarter of a Tuesday night Patriot League quarterfinal showdown, the Boston University Men’s Lacrosse team knew all too well how it felt to lose to Bucknell.

In their regular season matchup, the Terriers squandered an 8-4 first-half lead, getting outscored 9-0 in the second half for a 16-9 loss in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. The second time around, it was BU who did the late-game dominating.

On the Bison home turf, the Terriers (8-7, 3-5 Patriot League) gave No. 10 Bucknell (11-4, 7-1 Patriot League) a taste of its own medicine in a 12-11 victory to advance to the Patriot League semifinals. Freshman and recently named Patriot League Rookie of the Year Chris Gray notched five goals and four assists, sandwiching the game tying goal between a pair of assists to junior Brendan Homire.

Homire’s goal with 6:56 to play would stand as the game winner. His ninth of the year sends the Terriers to a Friday night matchup against top-seeded and eighth ranked Loyola.

Junior James Burr added two goals and an assist, senior Hayden Ruiz had one goal and three assists and classmates Jack Wilson and Greg Farris also found the back of the net. Wilson, who was named to the All-Patriot League Second Team, extended his point streak to 58 games.

Junior Quintin Germain held All-Patriot League First Teamer Will Sands to just two assists. Sands accrued three goals and seven assists during the regular season matchup and taking away his game was critical in Tuesday night’s victory.

Joe McSorley backboned a defense that held Bucknell scoreless for the final 21-plus minutes of regulation. The sophomore goalkeeper made 12 saves.

BU travels to Baltimore to face-off against Loyola Maryland at 4:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon, and the game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
