After graduating in 2021 she went to the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica, to study gliding treefrog reproductive ecology and behavior with Brandon G\u00fcell.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\">\n<h2>2019 &amp; 2021<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment1221\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment1221\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/warkentinlab\/files\/2019\/09\/AstridLizondroRecordsData.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1221\" width=\"300\" height=\"387\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment1221\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Javier M\u00e9ndez Narv\u00e1ez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Astrid Katerina Lisondro Arosemena is a Panamenian biology student from <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Universidad Autonoma de Chiriqu\u00ed. In 2019 she worked with Javier M\u00e9ndez Narv\u00e1ez to study physiological and biochemical mechanisms of nitrogen excretion in terrestrial frog embryos and nest-dwelling larvae, as mechanisms to avoid ammonia toxicity under dry conditions. She began studying thermal ecology of two\u00a0 foam-nesting frog species that use aquatic (<em>Engystomops pustulosus<\/em>) and terrestrial (<em>Leptodactylus fragilis<\/em>) nest sites, then did her undergraduate thesis on thermal ecology of another Neotropical frog. She returned in 2021 as a STRI-SENACYT intern, continuing her own thermal ecology research and learning methods for developmental biology from Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9 Salazar Nicholls.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>2019<\/h2>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\">\n<figure id=\"attachment1229\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment1229\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/warkentinlab\/files\/2019\/10\/LaurinePicture.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1229\" width=\"300\" height=\"373\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment1229\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by L. Mac\u00edas Bazante<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Henry Mac\u00edas Bazante recently finished his BSc at the Pontificia Universidad Cat\u00f3lica del Ecuador, Quito, working in the developmental biology laboratory of Andres Romero Carvajal. In Gamboa, he worked with Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9\u00a0 Salazar Nicholls to study the mechanisms of hatching enzyme release in red-eyed treefrogs and the ontogeny of hatching glands in glassfrogs.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/warkentinlab\/files\/2019\/09\/JenniSerranoRojas-GentamicinTreatment.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1139 alignleft\" width=\"300\" height=\"557\" \/>Jennifer Serrano Rojas did her BSc at the Universidad Nacional de San Antonio Abad del Cusco, Peru, and MSc at the University of Glasgow. She worked with Julie Jung to test the role of lateral line mechanoreceptors in escape-hatching of red-eyed treefrogs (<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.biologists.com\/jeb\/article\/223\/24\/jeb236141\/226044\/Multimodal-mechanosensing-enables-treefrog-embryos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">published<\/a> in <em>J Experimental Biology)<\/em>. She will be doing her PhD with Lauren O&#8217;Connell at Stanford University.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<h2>2018<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/warkentinlab\/files\/2019\/09\/ChloeFouilloux-TacAttack.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1134 alignleft\" width=\"300\" height=\"310\" \/>Chloe Fouilloux was a recent graduate from University of Minnesota. She studied developmental changes in how embryos use motion and tactile cues for escape-hatching decisions. She is now a PhD student working with Bibiana Rojas at the University of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4, Finland.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/warkentinlab\/files\/2019\/09\/CarolineGuevaraMolina-bosque.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1135 alignleft\" width=\"300\" height=\"338\" \/>Caroline Guevara Molina was a Masters student at the Universidade de S\u00e3o Paulo, Brazil. She used hatching plasticity to study the effects of hydration on thermal physiology and the maximum voluntary temperature (VTMax) of embryos. She returned to Panama in 2019 and plans to develop this research for her PhD project at USP.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/warkentinlab\/files\/2019\/09\/KattyGonzalezwithfrog.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1136 alignleft\" width=\"300\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/warkentinlab\/files\/2019\/09\/KattyGonzalezwithfrog.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/warkentinlab\/files\/2019\/09\/KattyGonzalezwithfrog-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/warkentinlab\/files\/2019\/09\/KattyGonzalezwithfrog-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Katherine Gonzalez was a recent graduate of the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica. She worked with Brandon G\u00fcell studying gliding treefrogs on the Osa Penninsula of Costa Rica in 2018 and 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/bioone.org\/journals\/ichthyology-and-herpetology\/volume-109\/issue-1\/h2020085\/Dehydration-Induced-Mortality-and-Premature-Hatching-in-Gliding-Treefrogs-with\/10.1643\/h2020085.short\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">publishing<\/a> her work in <em>Ichthyology and Herpetology<\/em>. She is now a PhD student in Ximena Bernal&#8217;s lab at Purdue University.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<h2>2017<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment1010\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment1010\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/warkentinlab\/files\/2017\/07\/Adeline-byBrandonwithImantodes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/warkentinlab\/files\/2017\/07\/Adeline-byBrandonwithImantodes.jpg\" alt=\"Adeline-byBrandon,withImantodes\" class=\"wp-image-1010 size-full\" width=\"300\" height=\"325\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment1010\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">by B. G\u00fcell<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Adeline Almanzar was a Boston University BA student in Behavioral Biology. She began in the Warkentin Lab analyzing other people&#8217;s videos of embryos hatching, then came to Panama in 2017\u00a0 and 2018 to record her own escape-hatching videos to examine how development changes embryo behavior and escape success in snake attacks.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"\/warkentinlab\/files\/2017\/07\/RachelSnyderRain-p300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/warkentinlab\/files\/2017\/07\/RachelSnyderRain-p300.jpg\" alt=\"RachelSnyder&amp;Rain-p300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1011 alignleft\" width=\"300\" height=\"355\" \/><\/a>Rachel Snyder had recently graduated with her BS in Ecology from Susquehanna University, where she studied salamanders. She collaborated with Ana Ospina to study how development changes the way embryos use motion and tactile cues in their escape-hatching decisions.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"\/warkentinlab\/files\/2017\/07\/AnaOspina-Playback-p300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/warkentinlab\/files\/2017\/07\/AnaOspina-Playback-p300.jpg\" alt=\"AnaOspina-Playback-p300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1012 alignleft\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>Ana Ospina Larrea had recently graduated as a BSc Biologist from Universidad del Quindio, Colombia, where she studied glassfrogs. She\u00a0 collaborated with Rachel Snyder to test how embryo responses to tactile, motion, and bimodal cues changed developmentally.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<h2>2016<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"\/warkentinlab\/files\/2016\/07\/IMG_4213-AlinaWatchesWasp-p300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/warkentinlab\/files\/2016\/07\/IMG_4213-AlinaWatchesWasp-p300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4213-AlinaWatchesWasp-p300\" class=\" size-full wp-image-925 alignleft\" width=\"300\" height=\"219\" \/><\/a>Alina Chaiyasarikul was a BU Biology student. She joined the lab in 2015, analyzing videos in Boston, then in 2016 began using macro-video to study developmental changes in embryo behavior and escape performance in wasp attacks.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"\/warkentinlab\/files\/2016\/07\/IMG_3368-MJSNwatchesEgg-p300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/warkentinlab\/files\/2016\/07\/IMG_3368-MJSNwatchesEgg-p300.jpg\" class=\" wp-image-927 size-full alignleft\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" \/><\/a>Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9 Salazar Nicholls, from PUCE, Ecuador, collaborated with multiple lab members, assessing developmental changes in the resilience of hatching in red-eyed treefrogs and swimming performance of glassfrog hatchlings. She is now a PhD student at Boston University.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"\/warkentinlab\/files\/2016\/07\/IMG_3350-KarinaWatchesEggs-p300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/warkentinlab\/files\/2016\/07\/IMG_3350-KarinaWatchesEggs-p300.jpg\" class=\" wp-image-926 size-full alignleft\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" \/><\/a>Karina Escobar, from Western Connecticut State University,\u00a0 collaborated with Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9, using manipulations of hatching embryos at different ages to assess developmental changes in the resilience of the hatching process.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"\/warkentinlab\/files\/2016\/07\/IMG_4039-Crystal-in-pond-p300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/warkentinlab\/files\/2016\/07\/IMG_4039-Crystal-in-pond-p300.jpg\" class=\" wp-image-924 size-full alignleft\" width=\"300\" height=\"290\" \/><\/a>Crystal Tippett, from Frostburg State University in Maryland, compared the process of spontaneous hatching and of early hatching induced by the slow, chronic threat of egg drying with the rapid &#8220;escape hatching&#8221; process induced by acute threats.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"\/warkentinlab\/files\/2016\/07\/JuanaRivera-p300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/warkentinlab\/files\/2016\/07\/JuanaRivera-p300.jpg\" alt=\"JuanaRivera-p300\" class=\" size-full wp-image-955 alignleft\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>Juana Rivera Ordonez from the University of Washington worked with Jesse Delia on glassfrog behavior in the field, and studied effects of hatching timing on hatchling performance in several species of glassfrogs with Jesse and Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<h2>2015<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/warkentinlab\/files\/2015\/06\/BrandonGuell-KMW_0589adj-s.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"size-full wp-image-790 alignleft\" width=\"300\" height=\"369\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Brandon G\u00fcell was an REU student from UC San Diego. He studied the ontogeny of hatching performance and how embryos use light cues in determining when an where to hatch.
