HIV\u00a0<span>stigma<\/span>\u00a0contributes to the overall HIV risk environment in Russia. URBAN ARCH researchers in St Petersburg and Boston recently conducted a longitudinal analysis of 700 PLWH in St. Petersburg, Russia, assessing the association between risky drinking and <em>DSM-IV<\/em>\u00a0<span>alcohol<\/span>\u00a0dependence and HIV\u00a0<span>stigma<\/span>\u00a0measured at baseline and 12\u00a0month follow-up.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Participants with<em>\u00a0<\/em><span>alcohol <\/span>dependence (n\u00a0=\u00a0446) reported significantly higher HIV\u00a0<span>stigma\u00a0<\/span>scores over time than those without (n\u00a0=\u00a0254).<\/li>\n<li>In secondary analyses, the team examined recent risky\u00a0<span>alcohol\u00a0<\/span>use and did not detect an association with HIV\u00a0<span>stigma<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Comments<\/em>: <span>Alcohol<\/span>\u00a0use disorder is associated with high HIV\u00a0<span>stigma<\/span>\u00a0among Russian PLWH, but the nature of the association is conjectural. HIV prevention efforts in Russia need to address both HIV-related stigma and alcohol\u00a0use disorder to mitigate their possible adverse effects among PLWH.
