The Russia Alcohol Research Collaboration on HIV\/AIDS (ARCH) study evaluated this association over time among 350 people with HIV who had not previously received antiretroviral therapy. Participants were mostly male (71%) with a mean age of 34 years; 77% had heavy drinking (defined as &gt;14 drinks\/week or 4 drinks\/day [men], and &gt;7 drinks\/week or &gt;3 drinks\/day [women]), 87% had hepatitis C virus, and 86% had smoking.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Heavy drinking was associated with elevated biomarkers IL-6, sCD14, and D-dimer in adjusted models over time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Changes in alcohol consumption after 1 year were not significantly associated with changes in these biomarkers compared with participants with no changes in consumption.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Comments: Since these biomarkers predict mortality, interventions to mitigate effects of heavy drinking on these immune processes merit consideration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Reference<\/em>: <\/span>So-Armah K, Freiberg M, Cheng D, Patts G, Tracy R, Doyle M, Gnatienko N, Bryant K, Krupitsky E, Samet JH.
