URBAN ARCH researchers in Uganda conducted a cross-sectional study among adult PLWH to evaluate the association between unhealthy alcohol use and latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), assessed by tuberculin skin test (TST). Participants were receiving antiretroviral therapy for \u2265 6 months, had no history of TB, and had unhealthy alcohol use.*<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span _mce_style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Of 729 participants enrolled, 617 returned for a TST reading and were included in the analysis. Of these, 217 (35%) tested positive for LTBI.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span _mce_style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">LTBI prevalence was highest among participants with \u201cvery high\u201d levels of alcohol use (77\/170, 45%), compared with those with \u201chigh\u201d (62\/191, 33%) and \u201cmedium\u201d levels of use (78\/256, 31%).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span _mce_style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">In multivariable analysis, \u201cvery high\u201d levels of alcohol use were associated with TST-positivity compared with \u201cmedium\u201d levels of use (adjusted odds ratio, 1.61).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p _mce_style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span _mce_style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">* Determined by urine dipstick ethyl glucuronide (alcohol biomarker) test (cutoff: \u2265 300 ng\/mL), and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Consumption (AUDIT-C); scores classified levels of alcohol consumption thus: \u201cmedium\u201d (4-5 for men, 3-5 for women), \u201chigh\u201d (6-7), and \u201cvery high\u201d (8-12). \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p _mce_style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><span _mce_style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"><i>Comments<\/i><\/span><span _mce_style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">: Alcohol use is a measurable and modifiable risk factor for latent TB infection and TB disease. This finding of increasing prevalence of LTBI at the highest levels of unhealthy alcohol use among PLWH suggests that their increased risk of TB disease may be attributable, in part, to higher rates of LTBI.
