His research focuses\u00a0on how people make decisions about land use within changing economic, social, and environmental settings,\u00a0and how those decisions affect the environment at local and regional scales. A specialist in paleoethnobotany,\u00a0the study of archaeological plant remains, <span class=\"searchHighlight\">Marston<\/span>\u2019s contributions to the field include novel ways of linking\u00a0ecological theory with archaeological methods to reconstruct agricultural and land-use strategies from plant\u00a0and animal remains.
