Interesting Articles and Resources

As we come across resources – articles, how-to videos, white papers, etc. – we will share them with the group. If any of our members encounter something that they would like to share with the group, we hope they will share what they find. To add a reference to this page, send a note to Monique or Bill.

Active Learning at BUMC – Kenith Wilson, a frequent contributor to the VCS, has put together a nice one-page graphic showing the BUMC Active Learning landscape. The focus is on tools available to faculty and staff to facilitate video creation and/or in-class recording, engagement, and assessment. Definitely worth a look!

VCS member survey – tools and output file types – responses from members regarding what video creation tools they use and the output formats those tools generate. This information was requested by IS&T to better understand requirements for hosting video output that is not suited to Mymedia.

Distinguishes between captions and subtitles as well as showing step by step how to add captions to a video created using Camtasia. It uses an older version of Camtasia (version 8) for a Mac, but the demonstration is clear and the concepts can be extrapolated to a newer  version.

4 Types of Video for Learning – this blog post was published by Techsmith, the creators of Camtasia and Snagit, but it really doesn’t make much of an attempt to sell product. It nicely summarizes types of videos, provides some good things to consider when starting the video creation process, and introduces a couple of new and interesting tools some of our members might find worth exploring.

6 Steps to Start Making a Video Tutorial Program – another blog post from Techsmith, but don’t let the connection to a vendor deter you from reading it. This post lays out how one can/should approach the creation of an instructional or informational video. If you’re bothered by the references to Camtasia, mentally substitute whatever video tool you use in place of Camtasia. By the way, the post contains a good 7 minute video that summarizes the points in the blog. It further expands on several of those steps with demonstrations.
