{"id":57,"date":"2017-03-19T13:30:58","date_gmt":"2017-03-19T17:30:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/thompsonlab\/?page_id=57"},"modified":"2017-03-19T22:14:47","modified_gmt":"2017-03-20T02:14:47","slug":"diversity-inclusion","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/thompsonlab\/outreach\/diversity-inclusion\/","title":{"rendered":"Diversity &#038; Inclusion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>BU AGREED&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0 Allies for Gender\/Sexuality, Racial &amp; Ethnic Equality &amp; Diversity\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Modeled after a program Diane co-deve<span style=\"color: #000000;\">loped at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.ucar.edu\/for-staff\/update\/working-uneion-together-again\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www2.ucar.edu\/for-staff\/update\/working-uneion-together-again&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1490026426554000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGJh3WFuyOVbyGx4xIbnbGG1On2Dg\" style=\"color: #000000;\">UCAR\/NCAR<\/a>, we ar<\/span>e developing a group to facilitate diversity, equity and inclusion in STEM at BU, which we have tentatively coined\u00a0<strong><em>BU\u00a0<span>AGREED<\/span>&#8212;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Allies for Gender\/Sexuality, Racial &amp; Ethnic Equality &amp; Diversity.<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The group will be modeled as a community of practice, where faculty, staff and students will meet to discuss the science behind barriers limiting diversity in STEM (<em>e.g.,<\/em>\u00a0unconscious bias, privilege, intersectionality, gender and sexuality, etc.) and discuss specific solutions\/recommendations for lowering these barriers.\u00a0 In each session, participants will read and discuss articles and participate in hands-on activities on each topic facilitated by the \u201clead learners\u201d.\u00a0 The program may consist of 4 sessions over the course of a semester (Introduction, Gender &amp; Sexuality, Race &amp; Ethnicity, Bystander Intervention Training).<\/p>\n<p>The aim of this community is to create a group of diversity practitioners (or allies) to help promote a diverse and equitable culture at our institution and beyond.\u00a0 The effectiveness of this program in increasing awareness and facilitating intervention in problematic situations will be assessed through pre- and post-participation surveys (developed in conjunction with UCAR\/NCAR partners and our institutions\u2019 assessment offices).\u00a0 The surveys will assess attitudes towards diversity, comfort level in talking about issues surrounding diversity and intervening in problematic situations, and general knowledge of topics surrounding diversity, equity and inclusion.\u00a0 The results can be compared across institutions to assess and improve the effectiveness of these programs and provide evidence-based recommendations for extending such programs to additional institutions or programs.\u00a0 Initial survey results from the UCAR\/NCAR program (now in its third cohort of diversity practitioners) suggest that the program increased participants\u2019 positive associations\/perceptions about diversity and increased their confidence as a bystander and their likelihood to intervene in problematic situations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BU AGREED&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0 Allies for Gender\/Sexuality, Racial &amp; Ethnic Equality &amp; Diversity\u00a0 Modeled after a program Diane co-developed at\u00a0UCAR\/NCAR, we are developing a group to facilitate diversity, equity and inclusion in STEM at BU, which we have tentatively coined\u00a0BU\u00a0AGREED&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Allies for Gender\/Sexuality, Racial &amp; Ethnic Equality &amp; Diversity.\u00a0 The group will be modeled as a community of [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":13172,"featured_media":0,"parent":55,"menu_order":1,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"page-templates\/no-sidebars.php","meta":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/thompsonlab\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/57"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/thompsonlab\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/thompsonlab\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/thompsonlab\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/13172"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/thompsonlab\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=57"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/thompsonlab\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/57\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":197,"href":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/thompsonlab\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/57\/revisions\/197"}],"up":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/thompsonlab\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/55"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/thompsonlab\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=57"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
