My older sister, who stutters like me, has played a huge role in me finding support within the stuttering community. Together, we were colleagues at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.campsay.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Camp SAY<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Stuttering Association for the Young) and became involved with our local <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/westutter.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (National Stuttering Association) chapters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now living in Boston and an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/stuttering\/group-therapy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adult Group Therapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> client at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/stuttering\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CST<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Center for Stuttering Therapy), I appreciate that the CST brings together people of different ages, professions, cultures and backgrounds. I am especially excited that this current fall 2024 semester\u200a\u2014\u200amy third as a client\u200a\u2014\u200ahas seen a noticeable increase in clients from the spring of 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/stuttering\/files\/2024\/12\/Matt-636x477.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"636\" height=\"477\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/stuttering\/files\/2024\/12\/Matt-636x477.jpg 636w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/stuttering\/files\/2024\/12\/Matt-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/stuttering\/files\/2024\/12\/Matt-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/stuttering\/files\/2024\/12\/Matt-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/stuttering\/files\/2024\/12\/Matt.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 636px) 100vw, 636px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI strongly believe it is equally important for people <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to be effective speakers as they are effective listeners\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; <\/span><b>CST adult client Matthew Edwards<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attending the adult group has benefited me in a handful of key ways. For starters, the group has enabled me to create meaningful connections with my peer group members.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With every group meeting or interaction, I enjoy listening to and sharing my thoughts about stuttering. Whether from an insight shared during the group or a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/stuttering\/group-therapy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weekly phone call<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I never fail to find something I have in common with a group member.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eric and I both enjoy watching movies and reading books. Nick and I both work in communications. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/stuttering\/testimonials\/cst-spotlight\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chris<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and I have both separately gone snowboarding with our close friends, who left us (novices) atop a mountain to trek down ourselves. Overall, the group helps me <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/stuttering\/what-is-stuttering\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learn more about many facets of stuttering<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growing up, I always believed stuttering is just one part of someone\u200a\u2014\u200athat someone\u2019s fluency is one aspect of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stuttering affects a person\u2019s emotions, relationships, career, etc. \u2013 myself included. I strongly believe communication works two ways, and it is equally important for people to be effective speakers as they are effective listeners. To me, effective communication does not require perfect fluency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communication and human-to-human connection take many forms: verbal communication, body language, listening, eye contact, writing and many more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within the CST\u2019s walls, I know I am accepted for who I am regardless of my fluency. I appreciate that the CST group provides an inclusive, pleasant space for all people to be their authentic selves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/stuttering\/files\/2024\/10\/Center-for-Stuttering-Therapy-0530-636x424.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"636\" height=\"424\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/stuttering\/files\/2024\/10\/Center-for-Stuttering-Therapy-0530-636x424.jpg 636w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/stuttering\/files\/2024\/10\/Center-for-Stuttering-Therapy-0530-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/stuttering\/files\/2024\/10\/Center-for-Stuttering-Therapy-0530-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/stuttering\/files\/2024\/10\/Center-for-Stuttering-Therapy-0530-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/stuttering\/files\/2024\/10\/Center-for-Stuttering-Therapy-0530-2048x1366.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 636px) 100vw, 636px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the same token, I am grateful that the CST adult group offers a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/stuttering\/about-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">client-driven, holistic approach to stuttering therapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CST clients hold ownership of their journey, free to focus on fluency-shaping techniques, stuttering modification strategies or a combination of both. The CST\u2019s techniques support clients\u2019 individual goals, such as incorporating a daily moment of mindfulness, decreasing avoidance habits. The CST also supports both short- and long-term targets for clients, such as stuttering more openly in the workplace or a client proactively disclosing their stutter in professional conversations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>CST clients hold ownership of their journey, free to focus on fluency-shaping techniques, stuttering modification strategies or a combination of both.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Each route supports clients\u2019 individual goals, such as incorporating a daily moment of mindfulness, voluntarily stuttering, and stuttering more openly in the workplace. Client-clinician check-ins also support medium- and long-term client targets, such as the client disclosing their stuttering before an upcoming work meeting or decreasing avoidance behaviors over a period of time set by the client.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, there is much to be said about being part of a SLP student\u2019s learning. Each semester, I have been fortunate to share my perspective on stuttering, discuss how my week is going, create a goal for myself and receive thoughtful questions from the supportive graduate student clinicians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a room of PWS comes together, a powerful and unwavering sense of community occurs. We may not all experience the same emotions or block over the exact same consonants, but we will definitely make sure we provide one another our undivided attention. We got each other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If anyone reading this is considering attending the adult CST group for the first time, I highly recommend stopping by.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sargent College.
