Facing her neighbor’s insults and being called “traitor”, over time it became more and more difficult to resist the pressure around her family. After moving from one place to another to start a new life, eventually, they had to accept the fact that there was no place for them where they would feel safe and secure anymore. After all, they were left with one and only one bitter decision: flee from their own homeland.

English Translation:

Back to list of interviews

(1)

It has been seven months since I left Turkey. I was a Turkish language teacher in a Tutoring Center before July 2016. I have eight to nine years of experience in teaching. There were some problems about tutoring centers before July 2016. I was worried about losing my job because the tutoring centers would be closed by the government. However, among all those difficult times, July 16, 2016 was the turning point of my family’s life. It was the beginning of the hard times.

We had an ordinary life before that date. My husband and I got married in 2013, and I gave birth to twins just 3 days after July 16, 2016. Until that date, we had an ordinary life with some difficulties like regarding job, but we didn’t have any extraordinary things happening in our life. However, on that day, we entered an episode in which our whole life was turned upside down where we did not know what to expect next. We learned from the breaking news that there was a coup attempt in Turkey, and just 2-3 hours later, they started saying on TV that this attempt was carried out by the Hizmet Movement (religious movement also known as Gulen movement which was accused of organizing the attempted coup and declared a terrorist organization by the Turkish government). We are also affiliated with the Hizmet Community, and we were working at a tutoring center associated with the Hizmet Movement. We were shocked, and everyone was on their phone asking each other what was going on. None of us had any clue about what was going on. I am pretty sure no one could sleep that night at all.

We woke up to a completely different day in the morning. That morning we started to realize that our lives were changing, and we saw the first signs that everything would be very different. We were having our breakfast on a small balcony next to the kitchen that morning. Our neighbor, whom we had only a small yard between us, came out to the balcony while we were having our breakfast and started yelling at us. “How come you are still here, what a disgrace! You should have left this neighborhood already. We don’t want you here, traitors!” My husband and I are not the kind of people that would offend anybody; it is not in our nature. We could defend ourselves as human beings, but we didn’t know what to say. We thought about going and talking to our neighbors and telling them that “We don’t know what you are talking about, we are not related to those things.” However, we could not do it because we were also shocked and didn’t know what to do. A war was declared on the people who were connected to the Hizmet Movement, and to the places which were associated with the movement, such as tutoring centers and schools. They started to arrest people who were related with the Hizmet Movement by any means.

That’s why we could not respond to our neighbors’ insults. Later on, we tried not to go out much because we were really worried that people would hurt us, or report (snitch) us. Neighborly relations are close in Turkey, and people usually know very well all the neighbors in their building or the next-door building. That’s why we were quite worried about even going out to the street.

I gave birth to my twins three days later. Since we were so worried, we couldn’t even feel the excitement of our newborn twins in the hospital. Even our very close friends did not come to congratulate us. Maybe these are very small things compared to the things we experienced later on, but we cannot forget it. Even with our very close friends that we saw every week, we felt a deliberate distance. We also didn’t know why they acted like that; the only reason might be that we were known as members of the Hizmet Movement. Even though they knew us very well, and they knew that we were at home that night, we were treated as if we went out there with weapons in our hands to help the coup attempt.

After giving birth to my twins, one of them needed to stay in an incubator. We were discharged with my other baby. Even though our neighbor across the building knew that I recently gave birth, she was constantly insulting us. She was posting on social media that she might report us to the authorities at any moment. Even though we wanted to leave that neighborhood, we couldn’t, as one of my babies was still in the hospital. I went to the hospital by wheelchair to see my baby every day for 15 days. I went there by wheelchair because I felt so much pain. Fifteen days later, my baby was discharged from the hospital. Right after my baby came home, we took only a few things the babies and we needed, and immediately left our home in a couple hours.

That house was not safe for us anymore. That lady, our neighbor, was constantly insulting us. Many people, including some of our friends, were arrested, and interrogated. We realized that there was no justice in this country any more. We could have defended ourselves. We could have said that we had nothing to do with the coup, and that we had learned everything about the coup from TV. We could have done that if we believed there was a rule of law in the country. We could have expressed ourselves. We realized that this was a false flag operation to finish the Hizmet Movement by using the coup attempt as an excuse.

Even before the coup attempt, there were some signals of these intentions, as people started to be imprisoned before 2016. There were a lot of people in jail before 2016 who were close to the Hizmet movement and were kept in prisons without due process. The fact that I was working in one of the Hizmet’s learning centers was enough evidence for them to send me to prison. That’s why we did not surrender. Instead, we went to our hometown and stayed with my mother for a month, then with my mother-in-law for another month. It went on like this.

Raising twins was quite hard. Around 40 days after the delivery, I got sick. I was flushing, swelling, breathless, and then fainting. I had these symptoms for a while. We went to the doctor several times, but somehow they couldn’t diagnose the problem. Then, we asked for a referral to a good hospital in Ankara, the capital city of Turkey. We stayed in that new hospital for a week. It was a very hard time. We had newborn babies. We did not know whether there were any arrest warrants for us. This made life very hard for us. Despite these concerns, I didn’t have any other option than going to the hospital because I was constantly feeling breathless and fainting. We were seriously concerned about getting arrested, because the police were going to almost all our friends’ houses one by one.

(2 and 3)

Finally, it was understood that the symptoms were caused by my gallbladder. The problem resulted in an increased level of liver enzymes and that made me faint. So I was told that I had to have surgery immediately. After we had learned the problem and the solution, we went back to our hometown to get a surgery date from the hospital. In the meanwhile, I fainted again and remained unconscious for minutes, which was the most serious one. For sure, I had to have the surgery. Throughout my surgery and recovery period, my family took care of my kids.

While we were having those hard times, no one supported us except our families. Only some of my colleagues from the same tutoring center called us to offer help, that’s all. After the surgery, we went back to our normal(!) life. We stayed with our kids sometimes at our families’ place and sometimes at other houses. This took 6 months. We were very careful not to get arrested. Because we were hearing they were constantly arresting people. People were reporting each other constantly. There were different reasons: “Oh, this person is associated with the Hizmet Movement, this person was a teacher at the tutoring center, this person subscribed to Zaman newspaper,* ” so on and so forth. ” (*Zaman is a newspaper associated with the Hizmet Movement that was later shut down by the government.) Since everyone was squealing on others, we were extremely worried.

One night when my twins were 6 months old, police officers came to my sister-in-law’s home to question my husband and me. They weren’t wearing regular police uniforms, they were undercover police officers. They found out, by automatic plate recognition system, that our car was around the area where my sister-in-law lives. They assumed that we were in my sister-in-law’s home. My sister-in-law and mother-in-law live close to each other. If they had come to my mother-in-law’s home that night we would have been arrested. God protected us that night. As soon as we heard that the police officers came to my sister-in-law’s house, we left my mother-in-law’s house. Then, we went to one of the distant relatives of my husband’s, and stayed there with the kids for ten days. On the other hand, other people did not want to host us, as they were concerned that something might happen to them if we were caught in their house. People were extremely scared.

Praise be to God, that distant relative opened his home to us and we stayed there for ten days. Later on, we rented an apartment in the same city where my mother lives. The homeowner didn’t ask for any contract or document that showed our real name when we were renting the apartment. When we needed to introduce ourselves, we used fake names. I introduced myself as a housewife and my husband introduced himself as a construction worker. While we were living in that apartment, we were very careful in our dialogues. We were so worried and never carried a phone with us. After that police raid on my sister-in-law’s house, our life totally changed. Five days after that raid, they came to my mother-in-law’s home to question them about us: “Where are they? What are they doing?” They all responded that, “We don’t know where they are, what they are doing, we don’t talk with them at all.” We couldn’t even communicate with our families. Yes, we had a cell phone but we never used it. Because they were heavily using tracking techniques to find people. They found us by an automatic plate recognition system. They found some of the people by following their family, tracking their phone signal.

During this time, we learned by chance that police officers came to my home in town B. right around the time after I had the surgery. Then our relatives moved our furniture to my mother-in-law’s home. We didn’t care about our belongings at all; our one and only concern was not to leave our babies without parents. We started to live in the house that we rented in the same city where my family lives. I could not work as I was caring for the babies. My husband couldn’t work because no one would give him a job. When he applied for a job, they asked questions like, “Who are you? Where is your highest degree?” When he told them that he had a college degree, and was unemployed, they got suspicious and wouldn’t give him the job. Interestingly, they would recognize people like us, teachers from Hizmet movement, as most of us were polite and nice by our looks. When they got suspicious about it, they wanted to stay away saying, “We do not want to get involved in this”.

In fact, if the employer was a supporter of the (governing) Justice and Development Party (AKP), they would report you to the authorities. We had lots of friends who were caught when they were working. That’s why we couldn’t work. It was impossible. Days passed with only our families’ support. We were in a state of so much horror and panic that seeing, out the window, any flashing light resembling a police car was enough to make our hearts beat faster. A doorbell ring was more than enough to make your hands shiver. Days were passing with these terrified feelings, and we were raising our children in that situation. At first, when the kids were little, they didn’t need to go out to the playgrounds -but when they got older, they wanted to go out to play. However, we couldn’t take them out because police officers were checking people’s IDs everywhere. They arrested a lot of people by checking their IDs and comparing them against a database. They had this practice especially around playgrounds, schools, and streets. There were lots of undercover officers in the street, all of a sudden they could just stop you, and ask for your ID.

There were facial recognition systems everywhere. If the other methods wouldn’t work, they would at least try to catch people with these systems. There was huge scrutiny. I am pretty sure that they wouldn’t have gone after real terrorists, murderers, or drug dealers like this. There was a strange animosity.

When my twins were little, they got sick constantly. They were tiny when they were born, about 4 pounds (1.8 kgs). They needed to go to the hospital very often. One night, one of the twins’ fever went up to 104°F (40°C). I will never forget that night. It was probably the most desperate time in my life.

Unfortunately, the painkillers did not help reduce the fever. I was constantly giving him a warm bath. I gave him a bath 2-3 times. He was shivering but his fever was not coming down. We could not call our family or friends. If we had used the phone, we might have gotten caught as soon as they tracked the signal. That night, we waited until the morning. Fortunately, my mother came. She knew where we were staying. Likewise, my mother-in-law knew the place. These were the only people who knew where we were staying. When they were visiting us, they turned off their phones to be cautious. They would park their cars in some other neighborhood, then they would walk to our place. They were walking to our home, checking their surroundings cautiously to see whether they were followed or not.

That morning, my mom took my son to the hospital. It turned out my son had a viral disease. He stayed in the hospital for a while, then he got well, thank God. My mom took care of all the procedures in the hospital. I could not visit him during this period. Afterwards, both twins needed to stay in the hospital for different reasons, but again, I could not stay with them. My mom took care of all the procedures related to the hospital. She stayed with them in the hospital. Because they always kept records of all the patients, companions, and reported them to the police every night. Next day, the police would show up, and arrest the patient or the companion. There were many people arrested in the hospital like that. Especially, among my close friends, there were some who got arrested right after giving birth at the hospital. That’s why we could not go to the hospital to visit our children. One day, our children were asleep and the light was on in only one room. It was either Eid-ul-Fitr or Eid-ul-Adha. Since it was Eid, there was no one in our building. Everyone was on vacation. We saw some light outside. We checked it out, and saw some police cars in front of our building. We turned off our lights right away. Luckily, the babies were asleep, that’s why it was quiet. We wondered whether they would come to our building or not. Indeed, it was our building, and they were ringing doorbells of the units in our building.

Since there was no one else in the building, no one opened the front door of the building to them. They could not get in. If they could get in the building, they certainly could get in our unit by force, too. It wasn’t unheard of for them to break and kick doors. Thank God, they walked around the building for about half an hour, or maybe 45 minutes, and then they left, as all the lights were off in the building. We were very concerned that they would come back with a locksmith to open the building’s main front door. We had our phones in our hands, we weren’t supposed to call anyone. But we called my mom. We told her we needed to get out right away. “Please come very cautiously, and park your car somewhere far.” Then, my parents came. We moved to my aunt’s house (my mother’s sister). We left our kids with my mom.

(5)

After my parents came into the apartment, my dad told me my uncle and aunt came to pick us up. We left the building immediately and got into my uncle’s car to go to their house. My mom took the kids to her home and we left with my uncle. Thank God, everything worked out well. Later, we hid cautiously so we wouldn’t get caught in different places. Later, we moved to another apartment, but the landlord was a bit disturbed by our situation. It turned out our next door neighbor was a cop. We did not know it. We searched names through the internet, and found out. I was seeing the photograph of the police officer who arrested my close friends.

If they had sent my file from the city where we worked to the city where we hid, it was quite possible that the cops would find and arrest us. Probably, our file was not sent to the city authorities where we hid. We continued to tell the neighbors and everyone else that my husband was a construction worker and I was a housewife. However, in that building, every unit was very close to each other, and everyone knew each other very well. Everyone started to ask, “When will your husband start to work, why is he not working?”, etc. We were responding “He will start soon”, etc. Sometimes we left our apartment for 10-15 days, and stayed with my mother because of these concerns. The days passed like this. The kids were growing up. They were 1.5 years old. They wanted to go outside, but we could not take them to the playground. There was a very nice playground next to our apartment building. We took them there a couple of times. One time we saw an undercover police there and we immediately left the playground. When my parents came to visit us, they took the kids to the playground, and the kids would be very happy. That’s why they were looking forward to their grandmother’s visits. We saw that we could not take this anymore. Our next door neighbor was a cop, and the other neighbors were always asking when my husband would work. A different kind of pressure. We thought they were getting suspicious. We needed to move again.

Since we decided to move again, we started to think about fleeing abroad. When my husband first mentioned this idea, I opposed him, saying “I will never do it. You can go yourself, I won’t take my children there.” The main reason was that it was very dangerous, as many people lost their lives fleeing abroad through the Evros river. Then, we discussed this idea with our friends abroad, and we started to think more positively. We finally made our minds to flee and talked with our families. Of course, our families did not want us to leave. They were quite against this idea. We tried very hard to convince them, and indeed, we never were able to convince them. Financially, we were not doing well. The human smugglers were asking a substantial amount. The only considerable amount of money we had was from the sale of our car. It was much less than what we needed. We borrowed some from our friends, and a friend took a bank loan for us. The biggest financial support came from my husband’s brother. We were able to flee with all this financial support.

Then, one night we started our journey (to the Evros river to cross the border into Greece). We had our twins, and another couple had a baby like us. We arrived at the shore of Evros. Thank God, we did not need to walk a lot, since my husband had arranged it that way. After 5 minutes of walking, we arrived at the Evros river. It was a Ramadan day. The sun was about to rise. We needed to inflate the boat and cross the river ourselves. There wasn’t anyone to guide us. While the guys were trying to inflate the boat, we took turns to do our morning prayers. We were able to inflate the boat, but we could not seal its cap. Somehow we could not do it. We were trying everything. We were very stressed. We thought we wouldn’t be able to make it. That was it. The sun was about to rise and villagers might come to the fields any minute. They would report us immediately. We were highly concerned. Thanks to God, we were able to seal it off by using a pocket knife and some plastic bags. However, it was not sturdy. If the seal were to come out, the boat might have flipped in the river.

With the help of God, we started our journey. We got on the boat, and we crossed the river quite fast. No one in the boat knew how to paddle. Only one person knew just a little. We turned around some. The kids were a bit grumpy, and screaming. This is because they refused to take sleeping pills. Thanks to God, no one heard their screaming. We crossed the river to the Greek side very fast. God helped us. It was such a relief. It was quite an interesting feeling. Normally, a person would feel sad when he/she leaves their country. However, we were feeling happy – indeed we felt safe after a long time. Then, we started walking. We walked 2-3 hours with the kids in our arms. It was morning, and we started to see Greek people going to work in the fields. They were quite friendly. They gave fruits and other food to the kids. They said “Merhaba” (“Hello” in Turkish). They asked how we were doing. We had been deprived of a friendly greeting for such a long time and we were surprised to see this warm attitude. We arrived at a village. There was a train station. We chatted with a Greek man at the station. We told him what we had experienced, and why we were fleeing from our country, and Erdogan’s cruelty. He said, “Yes, I am following the news, and I know what is going on over there. He is a really bad person.” So weird that even he was aware of what was going on; unfortunately our (Turkish) people did not understand it.

(6)

Then, he read some passages from the Bible. He gave us a brochure. He invited us to his home, and he let us use his restroom. Then, we asked him to call the police. We told them we wanted to surrender. Then the police came to get us. They did not treat us badly. There was a huge difference between the Greek police and the Turkish police. They did not take our phones. They were quite nice to our kids. They took us, but they were nice to us. Then, we stayed at a detention center with hard conditions for 2-3 days. We did not experience any bad treatment there. Even though the conditions were tough, we did not mind it at all. We might have ended up in jail for 8-10 years if we had stayed in Turkey. We would have been separated from our children. At least, we were together as a family, with our kids and spouses. The place was quite dirty. Imagine a place where the bunk beds were made of concrete. The blankets were smelling horrible. Every room had about 50 people. Males and females were mixed together. We could not eat the food they served, as we did not know if it was halal. We consumed the snacks we brought for the kids like figs, dates, and chocolate. We ate the rice pilaf and bread they served. Their cafeteria was not open. We spent 2-3 days like this.

Then, we moved to the city of Thessaloniki. We spent 15 days there. We completed the paperwork for our asylum application. Then, we moved to Athens. From there, we tried to travel to other European cities. In our third attempt, we successfully moved to Belgium. We arrived at Brussels Charleroi Airport. We spent two and a half months in Greece. It was a very hard time for us. This is because we did not have enough money; we had to pay the rent and the kids’ expenses – such as diapers and milk – never ended. Every minute you spent there felt like a disadvantage both financially and psychologically. We could not ask for money from our families. It was unnerving. We were looking for a European country, where we could live in better conditions, where we could have a job, and earn money. We could not leave the country through legal means, unfortunately. They did not leave a proper system for us to leave legally. The situation we were in was not something we experienced or knew before. We were living normal lives in our country, but all of a sudden we found ourselves in a different world, we were forced into this.

Then, we landed at Charleroi Airport in Brussels. The police there took us in, but surprisingly, they did not accept our asylum application. Later, we learned that it was not normal that they did not accept our asylum application. Because of the international immigration laws and the UN agreements, they are not supposed to reject it. During the process, they were speaking French and they did not bring a translator. They said, “We will deport you back to Turkey.” We said “We cannot go back to Turkey,” but they did not understand it as they didn’t speak English. They forced us to sign some documents, but they did not explain what they were. They did not say that it was a deportation document. I signed the document. There was another passenger on our plane, who was a teacher like us. He understood that it was a deportation document, and he refused to sign it. They forced us to sign it. They took our phones. We could not reach anybody. We wanted to have a lawyer. They said no. They said, “You have to leave the country in five days. We are taking you to some place.” We did not understand any of this. We left there in tears. We thought it was over, and we were going back to Turkey.

Then, they placed us in a kind of refugee camp, which was basically an apartment building. It was like a campsite affiliated with the airport. At that place, we met someone. We explained our situation to her. We told her that they forced us to sign some documents, and the cops behaved very badly. She was very surprised. She told us, “We can start your asylum process here. You can hire a lawyer, or I can find a lawyer for you if you’d like.” We explained our situation in detail from the beginning. We explained to her what we experienced in Turkey. She was very compassionate towards us. Then, after talking to other people in the camp, we learned that this was extraordinary that they processed our application. They don’t take asylum applications in that camp. She was very good to us, and tried to understand our situation. She helped us, and started our asylum process. Fortunately, since she started the process within that 5 days, we were not deported. Then, in a month, they gave us a residence permit. In the interviews, we explained our situation, and what we experienced in Turkey, what kind of accusations were made in Turkey. We presented the official documents for these accusations in the interviews. They were very surprised. The accusations for the prosecution were as follows: Being a subscriber to Zaman newspaper, being a subscriber to Sizinti magazine, working at a tutoring center which was affiliated with the Hizmet Movement. Along with these, there were also complaints from people around us that we are members of the Hizmet Movement.

These were the only accusations in the indictment. While there wasn’t any prior crime, all of a sudden we were branded as “terrorists” with these accusations. The people here understood the situation, as they had seen similar cases from Turkey earlier. This way, our asylum proceedings have begun. Now, we are staying here with our kids. My husband is taking language classes. I am taking care of the kids right now. As soon as the kids start daycare in a month or so, I will start taking classes as well. Our story was like this. I heard many horror stories of people, of my friends. When I compare my experience to the others, I feel very fortunate. But what we have gone through wasn’t easy either.

This is because you feel very discriminated against. Fortunately, we did not experience such a thing from our immediate families. However, our very close friends, relatives did not talk to us during this period. They did not call us at all. They did not even ask about me when they called my mom. Probably, they were afraid. Maybe they thought differently about us after these events. Maybe they thought we deserved this. However, these are the people who knew me since I was born. They knew quite well that I would not do anything bad at all. However, there was such an atmosphere in Turkey that no one could understand it without experiencing it. It was like everyone was under a spell. We heard many incidences about parents disowning their own kids. We heard about people who wouldn’t trust their own kids’ innocence. Very strange, unbelievable! These people could not speak up and say, “I know these people, and I don’t believe these accusations.” The people who were close friends a day before July 15, cut all ties right after July 15. They did not even ask where we were that night. They didn’t care to ask us if we had anything to do with the coup. If they would have asked, we would have told them that we heard these events from TV just like everyone. We were extremely surprised. Unfortunately, they did not ask. Some were afraid to ask.

(7-8)

I was not arrested during this period. We were always hiding. If you ask me whether I regret anything, I would say “No, I do not regret anything I have done. I do not regret working in those tutoring centers with my colleagues.” I am confident that I did not do anything wrong intentionally. I don’t think I hurt anyone intentionally. I only tried to raise very good students. I tried to help everyone around me, my friends, my colleagues, my relatives. If you ask them about me, no one would say anything bad about me. They would not find anything like stealing or being unlawful. Because I did not do any of them. However, my only regret would be to trust these people so much, to love them so much.

My faith in people… I could say that I learned not to trust people much. I understood that the humanity model our Holy Prophet taught us was something different. I understood that being a human is independent of race, language, and religion. They marginalized us in our own country, but the people in the countries where I did not know their place on the map welcomed us. It turns out being a human is about having the necessary human qualities. It is not about race, religion, or language. Our kids did not comprehend much of what we went through during this period. We cannot even count how many times we moved from one apartment to the other. It was so frequent. I could say that we did not stay in the same place for more than three or four months after July 16.

We were constantly changing our apartments, then changed countries indeed. The kids did not have any stable living conditions during this period. They could not comprehend it but these conditions were reflected in their behaviors. In particular, when we first moved to Greece, they started to throw and break things around them. Now, we have a regular routine, and they are better. They still miss their grandparents. They are almost two and a half years old. When they talk to them, especially one of them has tears in his eyes. He misses my mom a lot. Our beautiful country was devastated. If everything gets back to normal, this cruelty ends, the prejudice is gone, if they say they are sorry for what happened, only then I might think going back to my country. However, I have no hope of this happening. Even if it happens, it will take a long time. Yes, we miss our country, but there is nothing to do at this point.

After crossing the border to Greece, the strongest positive feelings we had were walking freely without any fear, taking our kids to playgrounds freely, going shopping without any worries. I could not get rid of the same concerns even during our first 2-3 months in Greece, and 1-2 months in Belgium. I had the same psychological trauma. When I see flashing police cars outside, I still get distressed. I still feel the need to look from the window and check outside. I have not yet been able to get over that psychology. It is very hard. Now, our only wish is to see all our friends, everyone get their freedom. They are all going through very hard times, especially their children. I have many friends who get psychological support, and use psychiatric medications. Again, my only wish is their freedom, and their reunion with their spouses and children soon so that they can dine together, they can go to parks together just like us. Whenever I do such ordinary things here, I always remember my friends there. This is because most of my friends’ husbands are in jail, or my friends themselves are in jail. I hope they all get free soon. These are all the things I can say for now. I do not know what I will think in the future when I remember these. I did not think I would tell this much. However, when I got into talking about it, I could not stop. I have not talked about these things for such a long time. I felt bad. I am sorry.

Turkish Transcription:

Back to list of interviews

(1)

Türkiye’den ayrılalı yedi ay kadar oluyor. 2016 Temmuz öncesi meslek olarak dershane öğretmeniydim.
