The database structure provides linkages of reported exposures to their corresponding active ingredients, allowing investigators to easily identify groups of exposures according to a specific component.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Medicinal agents are classified using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashp.org\/products-and-services\/ahfs-di\" title=\"AHFS Drug Information\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Hospital Formulary Service-Pharmacologic Therapeutic Classification system (AHFS-PTC)<\/a>, a widely recognized method for classifying drug information.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Non-medicinal agents, such and vitamins, herbs, and other natural products, are classified using unique expanded classes within the AHFS scheme.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Drug product codes are linked to their active ingredients, and corresponding pharmacologic classes, allowing investigators to easily identify groups of exposures according to a specific component (e.g., all acetaminophen exposures regardless of brand, single vs. multiple ingredient formulations), drug class ( e.g., Analgesic-Antipyretic), or according to specific product (e.g., acetaminophen with codeine).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Drugs and drug products may also be grouped into researcher defined categories (coalitions). Drug coalitions may be based upon a particular ingredient (e.g., Folic Acid), therapeutic use (e.g., Diuretics) or pharmacologic classification (e.g., Beta-Adrenergic Blocking Agents), or user specified grouping\u00a0(e.g., Non-selective NSAIDS without Aspirin). These drug groupings facilitate analysis by aggregating drug exposures based on\u00a0user defined inclusion and exclusion criteria, tailored to the needs of the researcher.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Advantages &amp; Features<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Multi-component products are automatically linked to the individual components (active ingredients)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Active ingredients are classified using a recognized standard pharmacologic classification system<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Contains entries which may not be found in commercial drug databases: international drug names, compounded medications, dietary supplements, investigational drugs, substances of abuse, and other\u00a0products without US National Drug Code (NDC) numbers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Includes NOS (&#8220;not otherwise specified&#8221;) numbers\u00a0to classify reports of unknown or unspecified drug exposures (e.g., &#8220;NOS-Antibiotic&#8221;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Includes researcher specific drug groupings (coalitions) which facilitate analyses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Old formulations and discontinued drug products are not deleted, making it useful for retrospective studies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Maintained by a research pharmacist<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Updated frequently, approximately 1,000 new codes are added each year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Easily integrated in a variety of data collection instruments (CATIs, CAPIs, and surveys)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The Slone Drug Dictionary and Drug Search program is available on CD, or by secure http transfer.
