The presenters will offer insights into the unique role of the world-language instructor in creating an inclusive and thoughtful learning environment in which diverse language learners are supported and included.
Increasing Access to World Languages: Supporting Students with Language Learning Disabilities
Linda Hecker, Professor Emerita at Landmark College Institute for Research and Training
Professor Hecker will discuss the cognitive basis for language learning; how language, memory and attention interact; what causes some students to struggle in world language classes and what instructional techniques support language study for diverse learners.
Day 2
Resources for Educators at BU
Lorraine Wolf, PhD, Director of Disability Services and 504 Coordinator at Boston University
The office will outline the role it plays in supporting Boston University students with disabilities and in helping them to succeed. At the end of the session, there will be an open forum for Q&A.
Applying Theory to Practice

This session will present an application of Professor Hecker’s theories and teaching strategies with concrete classroom activities and homework assignments designed to support the needs of students with language learning difficulties in courses from novice to more advanced levels.
