Dear Colleagues,<\/strong><\/p>\n

It has been wonderful to see so many at the\u00a0<\/span>regional meetings<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>(that weren\u2019t cancelled due to weather conditions!) recently.\u00a0 The regional network that has been developed for all public and non-public school nurses has provided us a wonderful opportunity to meet the goals of promoting strong school nursing clinical practice and developing leadership skills for all school nurses here in Massachusetts!\u00a0 Thank you for your participation and attendance!\u00a0 (hope to see many of you at our\u00a0<\/span>Western Regional meeting\u00a0<\/span>on Wednesday<\/span><\/span><\/em>\u00a0<\/span>this week!).\u00a0 Thank you to our regional consultants that provide this leadership! These meetings are held at no cost to participants.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

In addition, the School Health Institute For Education And Leadership Development (SHIELD) sponsored theFoundations Of School Nursing Practice<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>Conference for all nurses new to school nursing in Massachusetts this past week\u2026.with over a hundred new school nurses attending.\u00a0 Be sure to check with your regional consultants for the contact information for these nurses who are seeking employment \u2013 both part-time (per diem) as well as full time in our schools.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

SHIELD is also sponsoring several upcoming professional development events being held in the coming weeks. Included in this list of learning opportunities are the\u00a0<\/span>Racial Equity Institute<\/em>,\u00a0<\/span>Domestic Violence\/ Sexual Assault Conference<\/em>, and\u00a0<\/span>Medication Administration Program Management Workshop<\/em>.\u00a0 SHIELD is also planning an exciting series of intensive courses for this year\u2019s Summer Institute. The anticipated course topics include:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Domestic And Sexual Violence; Motivational Interviewing\/Substance Use 101; Planning For Equity; \u00a0Social Determinants of Mental Health; and \u00a0Trauma Sensitive Schools<\/em>. \u00a0\u00a0Please see the attached flyer or the website at:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>www.shield-bu.org<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>for more information.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We\u2019re excited to have Hannah Fraley, PhD, RN talk about her work.\u00a0 She has an article in \u201cAdvances in Nursing Science\u201d entitled \u201cSchool Nurses\u2019 Awareness and Attitudes Toward Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children\u201d and concludes \u201cSchool Nurses are in an ideal position to identify, prevent, protect and raise awareness of students who are at risk or victims of CSEC.\u201d\u00a0 She will discuss this research, her findings and next steps from this work. GRANDPARENTS RAISING GRANDCHILDREN:<\/u><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

A helpful resource for schools and districts working with grandparents (or relative caregivers) who are raising grandchildren (or younger relatives) is the Commission on Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, which has a\u00a0<\/span>website<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>devoted to education, networking, research, programs and support. The commission will host regional workshops for any grandparents or kinship caregivers this spring, at which the commission will cover topics important to relative caregivers and have representatives from agencies who work with grandparents raising grandchildren.
