At that event, we will look back at our successes since the Education Reform Act was passed 25 years ago and look ahead to the challenges we still face in closing achievement gaps and ensuring that every one of our 1,800 public schools is a school to which we would be proud to send our own children. I can\u2019t think of a more dedicated and talented educator to lead us in that effort than Jeff, and all of us here at DESE are looking forward to welcoming him into his new role. In closing, I want to thank the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education for giving me the honor of leading DESE in the dark hours following Mitchell Chester\u2019s death last June. And I want to thank all of my colleagues, here at DESE and in all of our schools and districts, for your support, your assistance, your advice, your encouragement, and your kind words. Your skill and dedication inspire me.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>Board of Elementary and Secondary Education Meeting:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\nThe Board of Elementary and Secondary Education held<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mass.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=d8f37d1a90dacd97f207f0b4a&amp;id=9bd5e87db0&amp;e=acc9a20804\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/mass.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3Dd8f37d1a90dacd97f207f0b4a%26id%3D9bd5e87db0%26e%3Dacc9a20804&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1522932800706000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGuHFVpYCGBngxr9KFOMVOumVwZtw\">two meetings<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>this week: a special meeting on March 26, 2018 to discuss\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mass.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=d8f37d1a90dacd97f207f0b4a&amp;id=f9254af28a&amp;e=acc9a20804\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/mass.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3Dd8f37d1a90dacd97f207f0b4a%26id%3Df9254af28a%26e%3Dacc9a20804&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1522932800706000&amp;usg=AFQjCNF69c7q1OYzl80_8WSsM6TAm0nmLg\">competency-based and personalized learning<\/a>, and a regular meeting on March 27. Tuesday\u2019s actions included a unanimous vote that \u201cthe Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education believes arming educators will make schools less safe, and the Board opposes any move to do so.\u201d The Board also voted to solicit public comment on proposed changes to regulations related to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mass.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=d8f37d1a90dacd97f207f0b4a&amp;id=2fc85589f9&amp;e=acc9a20804\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/mass.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3Dd8f37d1a90dacd97f207f0b4a%26id%3D2fc85589f9%26e%3Dacc9a20804&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1522932800706000&amp;usg=AFQjCNE1pvWxH-AzJRIl2frCczD7WK0vLg\">English learner programs<\/a>, voted to align regulations with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mass.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=d8f37d1a90dacd97f207f0b4a&amp;id=2ff7d066b0&amp;e=acc9a20804\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/mass.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3Dd8f37d1a90dacd97f207f0b4a%26id%3D2ff7d066b0%26e%3Dacc9a20804&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1522932800706000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGz88WpPyYX_RJWkWfGIHuesDgfCQ\">foster care<\/a>\u00a0provisions of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), and voted to solicit public comment on proposed changes to regulations needed to implement the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mass.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=d8f37d1a90dacd97f207f0b4a&amp;id=66239a0c19&amp;e=acc9a20804\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/mass.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3Dd8f37d1a90dacd97f207f0b4a%26id%3D66239a0c19%26e%3Dacc9a20804&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1522932800706000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHt0wc-d8WOiDb4ZstdxrBrBSQiGQ\">redesigned accountability system<\/a>\u00a0that the U.S. Department of Education approved as part of Massachusetts&#8217; ESSA plan.<\/p>\n<p>The Board did not take action on<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mass.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=d8f37d1a90dacd97f207f0b4a&amp;id=d61d0d4e6d&amp;e=acc9a20804\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/mass.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3Dd8f37d1a90dacd97f207f0b4a%26id%3Dd61d0d4e6d%26e%3Dacc9a20804&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1522932800706000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGXncdhOUUUNyqVevIsxnnZXrB7LA\">Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School<\/a>&#8216;s request to appeal the commissioner&#8217;s decision not to recommend its expansion, but it approved new probationary conditions for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mass.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=d8f37d1a90dacd97f207f0b4a&amp;id=f893f84574&amp;e=acc9a20804\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/mass.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3Dd8f37d1a90dacd97f207f0b4a%26id%3Df893f84574%26e%3Dacc9a20804&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1522932800706000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHVZWzALzw6XoyHoWlW6QJ5ovKeXQ\">Greenfield Commonwealth Virtual School<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mass.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=d8f37d1a90dacd97f207f0b4a&amp;id=d9e22cda3f&amp;e=acc9a20804\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/mass.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3Dd8f37d1a90dacd97f207f0b4a%26id%3Dd9e22cda3f%26e%3Dacc9a20804&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1522932800706000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEcg0hqNozQmmFl0VapedyWjshnFw\">Video of the meetings<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>is available online.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>Nominate teachers by<span>\u00a0<\/span><span data-term=\"goog_161561299\"><span>Sunday<\/span><\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span>for PAEMST:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\nThe<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mass.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=d8f37d1a90dacd97f207f0b4a&amp;id=492dfe5309&amp;e=acc9a20804\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/mass.us14.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3Dd8f37d1a90dacd97f207f0b4a%26id%3D492dfe5309%26e%3Dacc9a20804&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1522932800706000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFjr1-FtmfQWyOporNQugzfvsHSAw\">Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST)<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>is the highest honor the U.S. government bestows for K-12 mathematics and science (including computer science) teaching.
