Write a response to Sergei Dovlatov’s story. In your response, give answers to the following three questions.

1. The title seems to pose some problems. When translated into English literally, it expresses only some of the meaning, and taken out of context it fails to allude to the story’s theme. What is the story’s theme and author’s message? How would you translate the title?

2. Dovlatov vividly portrays his character and his milieu that commonly referred to as the Russian emigration of the “third wave.” In the meantime, the story per se is a loosely fictionalized account of émigré experiences, a chain of absurd episodes and full of comical connotations, quite apart from the first-person narrative. Moreover, it is hard to tell where the line of fiction blurs and the story begins. Does Dovlatov evoke sympathy to his fellow émigré or laugh at our human vanity and us? Does Dovlatov’s irony come from the mockery or from the life’s inherited absurdity?

3. Some of Dovlatov’s translators say that his stories are easy to translate, as the structure of his sentences does not complicate the work of the translator. Others say that Dovlatov writes with a deceptive minimalism, and his irony and linguistic dexterity have made him one of the most difficult Russian writers to translate. Translate a 100-150 word excerpt from the story and comment on your biggest challenges in the process.

He was considered an unlucky fellow. Teachers contrived not to notice him at all. During parent-teacher conferences, they only spoke only about A-students and F-students. The average student, like Golovker, was given no more than a minute. Golovker did not participate in amateur art activities. He could not draw or write poetry. He even read poetry, as they say, without expression.

The chorus teacher said to him:

– You have no voice. And the soul seems to be missing also.

During pioneer meetings, Golovker was asked:

– What do you like? How do you spend your free time? Maybe you collect something, Golovker?

– “Yes,” Golovker replied languidly.

– What?

– Yes, yes.

– What exactly?

– Money.

– Do you save money?

– Well.

– What for?

– I want to buy something.

– What?

– Just one thing.

– What? Answer. We’re asking you.

– “A winter coat,” Golovker replied…

He applied where the competition was not too fierce. Specifically – in the Sanitary-Hygiene Department. He studied there for six years. And just like in school, he went unnoticed. Girls avoided him. He did not drink wine. He was indifferent to sports.

Having finished school, Golovker applied to the institute. Then it was considered the only road in life. Almost everywhere the competition was huge. Golovker applied carefully. He sent documents to where the competition was nearly the lowest. Specifically to the sanitary and hygienic institute. He studied there for six years. Just like at school he went unnoticed. Girls avoided him. He did not drink wine. He was indifferent towards sports. When Golovker married, everyone was amazed. Liza Makovskaya was absolute opposite. She was a redhead, bold and attractive. She smoked, swore and sang in a student jazz band. Athletic, well-dressed young people crowded around her constantly. Everyone took care of Liza. She had no husband and had not married. But in the fifth year she gave birth to a girl who looked like her. And also resembles the Deputy of the Komsomol for ideology. Shortly Liza turned into a woman of difficult fate. By her 25th year she managed to be disappointed in life. And there appeared Golovker. Silent, shy. He did not bring her flowers, but vegetables and fruits for the baby. He performed small, household chores flawlessly.
