Prior to joining BU, she spent 8 years as an Associate Research Scientist at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.andersoncabotcenterforoceanlife.org\/\">New England Aquarium<\/a>, where she simultaneously held positions at UMass Boston and the Smithsonian Institution. She is the lead scientist for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluenaturealliance.org\/\">Blue Nature Alliance<\/a>, which is a global partnership to catalyze large-scale ocean conservation. She was formerly the co-Chief Scientist of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phoenixislands.org\/\">Phoenix Islands Protected Area<\/a> (PIPA) Conservation Trust, and has been working with marine protected areas for two decades. She is a member of <a href=\"https:\/\/womenworkingforoceans.org\/\">Women Working for Oceans (W2O)<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/explorers.org\/\">Explorers Club,<\/a>\u00a0and is a\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faculty Associate at the Boston University Frederick S. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/community\/pardee-fellows\/\">Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future<\/a>. She received a B.S. from <a href=\"http:\/\/nbb.cornell.edu\/\">Cornell University<\/a>, a Ph.D. from <a href=\"https:\/\/ase.tufts.edu\/biology\/\">Tufts University<\/a>, and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at <a href=\"https:\/\/oeb.harvard.edu\/\">Harvard University<\/a>. She is a member of the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;\">Board of Directors for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.org\/en-us\/about-us\/where-we-work\/caribbean\/\" style=\"font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;\">The Nature Conservancy &#8211; Caribbean<\/a><span style=\"font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;\">. Tyler graduated from BU with a Bachelor of Arts in 2022. He majored in Marine Science and minored in Biology, mentored by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fulweilerlab.com\/\">Dr. Wally Fulweiler<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/alia-al-haj-20339798\/\">Dr. Alia Al-Haj<\/a>. He spent his undergraduate years investigating the biogeochemistry of coastal ecosystems, culminating in a senior honors thesis exploring the influence of decomposing <i>Zostera marina<\/i> wrack on greenhouse gas fluxes on New England sandy beaches. After graduating, Tyler served as a biogeochemistry intern at <a href=\"https:\/\/emerald-tutu.com\/\">The Emerald Tutu<\/a>, a coastal resilience startup pioneering a network of salt marsh floats to reduce wave action and ameliorate water quality in Boston Harbor. He designed experiments for field and lab tests of prototypes\u2019 nutrient uptake capabilities as well as built the framework for a biogeochemical model to assess the ecological impacts of floats on Boston Harbor and vice versa. He just completed his MS in Biology with the Rotjan lab, studying the habitat use of pelagic sharks in MPAs in the northwestern Atlantic Ocean. His research broadly seeks to understand ecological patterns and processes in deep-water coral ecosystems, particularly on seamounts. His current project in the lab seeks to identify and describe protected deep-water coral biodiversity, as well as patterns in phylogenetic community structure, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fmars.2020.00042\/full\">equatorial Pacific<\/a>\u00a0and surrounding waters. His work leverages data collected from remotely operated vehicles with existing collection resources present in museum archives. Steve is also an active member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/nautiluslive.org\/people\/steve-auscavitch\">Corp of Exploration<\/a> on the E\/V <em>Nautilus<\/em> where he has contributed as science lead and science data manager on several cruises since 2014. He received his BS in Marine Science from the University of Connecticut at Avery Point, his MS in Marine Biology at the University of Maine, and PhD in Biology from Temple University. Prior to this, Brian spent 8 years with <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanexplorer.noaa.gov\/\">NOAA&#8217;s Office of Ocean Exploration and Research<\/a> working on board the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/our-people\/brian-kennedy\">During his time with NOAA<\/a> he served as NOAA Corps officer and a civilian managing ocean exploration expeditions as well as leading OER&#8217;s telepresence efforts. She is working on dynamic energy budgets and maternal provisioning in the temperate coral<i data-ogsc=\"\">Astrangia poculata<\/i>. She completed her PhD at the University of Rhode Island with <\/span><span data-ogsc=\"purple\"><a id=\"OWAef590d65-3260-c748-42f0-f170145cb5f2\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/bio\/meet\/carlos-prada\/\" title=\"https:\/\/web.uri.edu\/bio\/meet\/carlos-prada\/\" data-linkindex=\"0\" data-ogsc=\"purple\">Dr. Carlos Prada<\/a><\/span><span data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0in 2025, with a focus on the effects of light on coral biology. She investigated morphological and physiological plasticity in temperate and tropical corals and used isotope ecogeochemistry to quantify coral energetics. In the lab, he works with ichthyoplankton samples from throughout the Pacific in order to gather information that may inform future conservation efforts, in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sea.edu\/academics\/faculty_detail\/dr._jan_witting\" target=\"_blank\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.sea.edu\/academics\/faculty_detail\/dr._jan_witting&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1630543217559000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHX7q92p1XBIXMad6R86rPhJRptzA\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jan Witting at SEA<\/a>. In her undergraduate career at College of the Holy Cross, she worked with <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"c-link\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/www.holycross.edu\/academics\/programs\/biology\/faculty\/justin-mcalister\" delay=\"150\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" href=\"https:\/\/www.holycross.edu\/academics\/programs\/biology\/faculty\/justin-mcalister\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Justin McAlister<\/a> investigating the phenotypic plasticity of <i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">Lytechinus variegatus<\/i> sea urchin larvae under various feeding regimes. At BU, she is interested in quantifying the energetic trade-offs corals make under anthropogenic stressors. To this end, Caroline draws from the disciplines of mathematical modeling, larval ecology, ecological toxicology, and energetic physiology to understand how marine organisms are adapting to a changing oceanic system. Caroline is also a member of the URBAN Biogeoscience and Environmental Health program at BU, where she investigates the effect of urban nutrification on the physiology of the temperate coral <i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">Astrangia poculata <\/i>in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. An ecophysiologist at heart, Caroline has dipped her toes in population ecology, phylogeography, and epigenetics, but has found her home in the multidisciplinary work of the Rotjan lab. Maddi earned her B.A. from the College of the Holy Cross in 2023, majoring in Biology and minoring in Environmental Studies. As an undergraduate, she worked in the Marine Organismal Biology Laboratory with Dr. Justin McAlister and Dr. Elizabeth Burmester, where she was introduced to <i data-ogsc=\"\">Astrangia poculata<\/i>\u00a0research. She also was a member of Holy Cross&#8217; Division I Swimming and Diving Team. For the past two years, Maddi has been a Senior Laboratory Technician at the Harte Research Institute, contributing to various coastal conservation and restoration projects along the Texas coast.<\/p>\n<p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Maddi&#8217;s passion for marine science stems from her connection to St. Croix, USVI, where she is originally from.
