This section provides resources for grant policies and procedures. Please refer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/researchfacultyloa\/compliance-strategies\/\">Compliance Strategies<\/a> page.<\/p>\n<p><span><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Delegate Tasks in eRA Commons<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Did you know that as a PI you can delegate tasks in eRA commons? This can be particularly helpful if you have a trusted collaborator that can help you with progress reports.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.era.nih.gov\/register-accounts\/manage-delegation.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Delegate tasks in eRA commons<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Institutional Signing Officials (SO) can also delegate these tasks if you are unable. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.era.nih.gov\/erahelp\/commons\/Commons\/1_Admin\/delegations\/del_on_behalf.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SO delegation\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">NIH Progress Reports &amp; Closeouts<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Progress reports and closeouts are generally due 6-8 weeks prior to the end of the budget period. While you are planning for your leave it is helpful to check when these are due. If they are going to be due during your leave, it is helpful to talk to your admin and generate a plan which may include getting an early start on the report and also reviewing your spending rate to determine if you will be over or substantially under budget for that grant period.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">NIH Policies Related to Leaves<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A leave of less than 3 months only requires institutional (BU\/BMC) approval.<\/li>\n<li>A leave of more than 3 months must be requested and approved in writing by the <a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/grants\/policy\/nihgps\/html5\/section_12\/12.13.1_leave.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">funding NIH institute<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>For career development (K) awards, the awardee may request to reduce effort to less than 75% for up to 12 continuous months for personal or family situations. Other research costs will continue to be paid and the K awardee may request to extend the duration of the award to account for the reduced effort. <a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/grants\/guide\/notice-files\/NOT-OD-18-156.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">K award policies<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Leaves &gt;12 months require written approval. Grant may be placed in no-cost extension with no charges to grant allowed during that time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">NIH Family Friendly Initiatives<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There are several NIH initiatives that are worth looking into: <a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/policy-and-compliance\/policy-topics\/nih-family-friendly-initiative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Family friendly initiatives<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Supporting <a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/grants\/guide\/notice-files\/NOT-OD-23-170.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cre-entry\u201d through supplements<\/a> \u2013 Postdocs or faculty members who have taken time off for caregiver leave are eligible for research supplements.<\/li>\n<li>Additional supplements may be available for research continuity for <a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/funding\/nih-guide-for-grants-and-contracts?query=continuity&amp;type=active,notices,activenosis&amp;foa=all&amp;parent_orgs=NIH&amp;orgs=all&amp;ac=Admin%20Supp&amp;fields=title&amp;spons=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">early stage investigators<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Early-stage investigator (ESI) status can be prolonged due to eligible caregiver leave. <a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/grants\/guide\/notice-files\/NOT-OD-19-125.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Requests are submitted via eRA Commons.<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul><\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Foundation Grants<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you have grants from foundations and other sources you should always defer to their policies<\/li>\n<li>Talk to your department administrators and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/research\/profile\/sponsored-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Office of Sponsored Programs<\/a> to clarify<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Establishing procedures for managing your grants &amp; finances is imperative during a leave of absence.
