His research focuses on exploring different technologies and developing manufacturing paradigms to design and fabricate innovative robotic systems. His main research area is soft robotics. He has explored soft robotic technologies to develop novel manipulators, which integrate design principles from biological systems to perform advanced procedures in minimally invasive surgery (MIS). He is interested in expanding the potential of soft robots across different scales to develop novel reconfigurable soft-bodied robots.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Prof. Ranzani received a Bachelor&#8217;s and Masters degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Pisa, Italy. He did his Ph.D. at the BioRobotics Institute of the Sant\u2019Anna School of Advanced Studies under the supervision of Prof. Arianna Menciassi on soft mechatronic devices for MIS, working in the framework of the STIFF-FLOP European project. In 2014, he joined the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences as a postdoctoral fellow. He worked in the Harvard Microrobotics Lab (Prof. Robert J. Wood) and the Harvard Biodesign Lab (Prof. Conor Walsh). In his postdoctoral research, he explored advanced manufacturing technologies for novel medical devices. His toolkit includes conventional theories on system analysis and control, traditional and soft robotics, bioinformatics, and mechatronics.<\/span><span aria-label=\"\" class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"><\/span><span>He received his B.S. degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in Mar. 2014 and Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering (supervised by Prof. Kyu-Jin Cho) in Aug. 2021, both from Seoul National University. Yanzhou earned his Ph.D. with <a href=\"https:\/\/amiro.lcsr.jhu.edu\/\">Dr. Iulian Iordachita<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ciis.lcsr.jhu.edu\/doku.php\">Dr. Russell Taylor<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/amiro.lcsr.jhu.edu\">Advanced Medical Instrumentation and Robotics Laboratory<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/lcsr.jhu.edu\/\">Laboratory for Computational Sensing + Robotics<\/a> from Johns Hopkins University in 2025. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electromechanical Engineering from UCLouvain, Belgium, in 2019 and 2021, respectively. He then obtained his Ph.D. degree from the same university at the Institute of Mechanics, Materials, and Civil Engineering under the supervision of Prof. Bruno Dehez. His doctoral thesis focused on passive magnetic levitation strategies for high-speed transportation systems.
