NOV 29: Research on Tap: Health Data Science

The goals of this Research on Tap are to strengthen the growing community of BU health data scientists and to catalyze new collaborations across the University. To this end, the Population Health Data Science program will offer seed funding awards to event attendees, with the goal of advancing data-driven, interdisciplinary science in health or biomedicine. Funded projects will receive $5,000 for a one-year period, which can be used to support BU trainees, research supplies, equipment, etc. See more details about the application guidelines below.

Application Guidelines

Faculty, research staff, and/or students who attend the Research on Tap event are invited to apply for this seed funding opportunity by Wednesday, December 13. If the PI is a student, postdoc, or a non-faculty researcher, then a faculty mentor should be included as a member of the team. At least one member of the research team must be from the School of Public Health.

Goal: Facilitate new interdisciplinary collaborations with the School of Public Health to advance data-driven science in any health or biomedical topic Funding: Projects will be funded at a maximum level of $5,000 for a 1-year period. The funds can be used to support Boston University graduate students, postdoctoral, and undergraduate students; research supplies, equipment, etc. They may not be used for publication fees, travel to conferences, faculty salaries, or indirect costs.

Eligibility: Faculty, staff, and/or students who attended the Health Data Science Research on Tap event are welcome to submit an application in the role of PI. If the PI is a student or staff member (eg postdoc, research scientist, etc) then a faculty mentor/supervisor should be included as a member of the team. At least one member of the research team must be from the School of Public Health.

Proposal Requirements: Applications must include:

Cover sheet that includes: i) the project title, ii) members of the research team and their affiliations, and iii) a brief abstract (maximum 200 words)
Description of the background, specific aims, and approach (maximum one page).
Budget and budget justification
If selected, the lead investigator is required to present a poster summarizing the status of the proposed work during a Health Data Science poster session to be held on the BUMC campus in Fall 2024.

All proposals submitted by the deadline of December 13, 2023 will be reviewed by the program’s evaluation committee. The evaluation committee submits their recommendation to the Population Health Data Science Director & Associate Director who will make the final decisions. Priority will be given to proposals that are interdisciplinary in nature and with the highest potential for subsequent publication and/or submission of a competitive grant application.
