We found that during certain very congested periods, socially optimal routing can lead to as much as 50% reduction in congestion. This work is in collaboration with my colleague <a href=\"https:\/\/christosgcassandras.org\/\">Christos Cassandras<\/a>\u00a0and two of our students, <a href=\"http:\/\/people.bu.edu\/jzh\/\">Jing Zhang<\/a>\u00a0and Sepideh Pourazarm. It was completed while I was on sabbatical at MIT.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/mitsloan.mit.edu\/newsroom\/press-releases\/new-study-offers-hope-to-commuters\/\">press release<\/a>\u00a0was released by MIT Sloan and KPCC, the southern California NPR station, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scpr.org\/news\/2018\/01\/08\/79666\/could-apps-help-ease-traffic-congestion-or-will-on\/\">aired a segment and posted a story<\/a> on this work.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/systems\/2018\/01\/12\/new-study-offers-hope-for-stressed-out-urban-commuters\/\">related story<\/a> appeared on the web site of the <a href=\"http:\/\/bu.edu\/cise\">Center for Information and Systems Engineering<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We are grateful to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctps.org\/\">Boston region Metropolitan Planning Organization<\/a>\u00a0and to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.gov\/\">City of Boston<\/a>\u00a0for providing access to the traffic data that made this work possible.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We are publishing a new paper in the Proceedings of the IEEE\u00a0which used minute-by-minute traffic data from the Boston area to estimate the effect on traffic congestion of drivers&#8217; selfish route selection as opposed to a more coordinated, socially optimal routing scheme.
