{"id":106,"date":"2011-08-08T12:41:22","date_gmt":"2011-08-08T16:41:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/paschalidis\/?p=106"},"modified":"2015-06-12T16:48:22","modified_gmt":"2015-06-12T20:48:22","slug":"106","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/paschalidis\/2011\/08\/08\/106\/","title":{"rendered":"Cyber-Security Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Rachel Harrington<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_44\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44\" style=\"width: 172px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/paschalidis\/files\/2015\/06\/Paschalidis_WEB_READY2-222x300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/paschalidis\/files\/2015\/06\/Paschalidis_WEB_READY2-222x300.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Yannis Paschalidis (ECE, SE)\" class=\" wp-image-44\" height=\"219\" width=\"162\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-44\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Yannis Paschalidis (ECE, SE)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As people grow more dependent on computers for everything from accessing their bank accounts to storing sensitive information, cyber security has become an increasingly important research area.<\/p>\n<p>At Boston University, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ece\/people\/faculty\/o-z\/ioannis-paschalidis\/\">Professor Ioannis Paschalidis (ECE)<\/a> is hoping to improve upon computer data protection by developing an effective way to detect intrusions into private networks and any exfiltration of sensitive or classified information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCyber attacks not only can compromise classified information \u2013 whether military, government, or corporate \u2013 but also cripple the nation\u2019s key infrastructure \u2013 including financial institutions, telecommunications, air-traffic control, and the electricity grid,\u201d said Paschalidis. \u201cBeing able to detect such attacks is an important first step to effective counter-measures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Army Research Office seemed to agree with his sentiments recently when they awarded $600,000 to his project, \u201cA Coordinated Approach to Cyber-Situation Awareness Based on Traffic Anomaly Detection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paschalidis, the principal investigator (PI) on the project, will work closely with Co-PIs, BU professors, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ece\/people\/faculty\/a-g\/christos-cassandras\/\">Christos Cassandras (ECE)<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cs.bu.edu\/~crovella\/\">Mark Crovella (CS)<\/a>, and Paul Barford from the University of Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p>The team aims to build upon their previous research in order to develop a series of anomaly detection algorithms and tools that will monitor network traffic and operate at both local and global levels. To improve counteraction, input will be processed by a clustering\/pattern recognition approach that will identify and classify specific cyber attack scenarios.<\/p>\n<p>Looking forward to partnering with the Army Research Office, Paschalidis said, \u201cThis collaboration will provide us with real examples of attacks we can leverage to improve our methods.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Rachel Harrington As people grow more dependent on computers for everything from accessing their bank accounts to storing sensitive information, cyber security has become an increasingly important research area.
