About

Overlooked is an international research network dedicated to exploring poverty in the ancient world. We aim to define both “poverty” and the “ancient world” in broad and inclusive ways, studying artistic expressions of impoverishment, absence and lack as well as the historical and material realities of poverty in antiquity. While our current work has focused on Greco-Roman antiquity, we look forward to including ancient Egypt, China, and more in future projects as we seek to redefine traditional scholarly boundaries.

Overlooked also has an outreach component that aims to connect with students, colleagues, and the wider public. We have taught students about public-facing scholarship, organized discussions on the state of the field, and designed our blog as a venue for making relevant academic research accessible to non-specialists and broadly teachable in courses on Greco-Roman antiquity and adjacent disciplines.

Please check out our News and Events page for more information about our work. And please consider joining the network with this Google Form to be included in future announcements and new initiatives!
