Bio:
Originally from Michigan, Madeleine moved to the U.S. west coast to begin her graduate studies at the University of Washington, where she is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Earth and Space Sciences. Maddy’s scientific fieldwork has taken her on research expeditions far offshore to study underwater fault zones capable of generating large earthquakes and tsunamis in the Pacific Northwest. But her passion truly lies at the intersection between science and people. This has led her to her current position as a Washington Sea Grant Coastal Resilience Fellow with the Shoalwater Bay Indian Tribe, combining her passion for coastal hazards science and education with local, tribal-led efforts to prepare for a major Cascadia earthquake and tsunami event.
Main lessons/takeaways from the ASI fellowship:
“After visiting communities impacted by the 2011 Japan tsunami during ASI, this experience made me want to work directly with communities exposed to tsunami hazards. This partly led me to my current WA Sea Grant position with the Shoalwater Bay Indian Tribe.”
