Claire Divola

She/her
Institution while in the program: UC Santa Barbara
Study area: Sedimentology
Graduate Degree: Ph.D.
Bio:
Claire is a PhD candidate in Earth Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara, working in the CORES Lab with Dr. Alex Simms. Her research focuses on reconstructing past sea-level change and earthquake histories using coastal sediments, microfossils (especially foraminifera), and radiocarbon dating. During her PhD, Claire has primarily worked in California salt marshes and estuaries along the San Andreas Fault, as well as with Southern Ocean archives that constrain radiocarbon reservoir effects. Claire combines fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and statistical modeling to better understand coastal response to tectonics and climate change.
Main lessons/takeaways from the ASI fellowship:
“The ASI program gave me a more interdisciplinary way of thinking about coastal hazards and resilience. I gained a stronger understanding of how different fields come together in coastal risk research, as well as a deeper familiarity with remote sensing techniques used to study these environments. I also gained valuable insight into Japanese culture and how history, science, and hazard preparedness intersect in shaping community resilience.”
