This project aims\u00a0at developing next-generation AVs, capable of learning and on-the-fly adaptation to environmental\u00a0novelty. These systems need to be orders of magnitude more energy efficient than current systems\u00a0and able to pursue complex goals in highly dynamic and even adversarial environments.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Biological organisms exhibit the capabilities envisioned for next-generation AVs. From insects to birds, rodents and humans, one can observe the fusing of multiple sensor modalities, spatial awareness, and spatial memory, all functioning together as a suite of perceptual modalities that enable navigation in unstructured and complex environments. With this motivation, the project will leverage deep neurophysiological insights from the living world to develop new neuroscience-inspired methods capable of achieving advanced, next-generation perception and navigation for AVs. The project will advance a science of autonomy, which is critical in enhancing DoD capabilities to execute missions using ground, sea, and aerial AVs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/neuroautonomy\/files\/2019\/05\/Thrusts-graphic-v5-1024x928.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-211 alignnone\" width=\"753\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/neuroautonomy\/files\/2019\/05\/Thrusts-graphic-v5-1024x928.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/neuroautonomy\/files\/2019\/05\/Thrusts-graphic-v5-636x577.jpg 636w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/neuroautonomy\/files\/2019\/05\/Thrusts-graphic-v5-768x696.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/neuroautonomy\/files\/2019\/05\/Thrusts-graphic-v5.jpg 1048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 753px) 100vw, 753px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span>The project&#8217;s multidisciplinary <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/neuroautonomy\/people-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">team of investigators<\/a> includes renowned researchers from Boston University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and five Australian-based universities collaborating on the allied <a href=\"https:\/\/electrical.eng.unimelb.edu.au\/control-signal-processing\/neuro-autonomy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AUSI-MURI Project<\/a>. This research team combines experts in robotics and engineered systems with experts in neuroscience and brings technical approaches originating in the fields of control theory, computer science, robotics, computational intelligence, machine learning, mathematics, neuroscience, and cognitive psychology. Their synergy will lead to neurobiologically-inspired methods enabling breakthroughs in autonomy and robotics research.\u00a0 The project is led by Ioannis (Yannis) Paschalidis, director of the Center for Information and Systems Engineering, and professor in the College of Engineering at Boston University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Research activities are organized around four tightly coupled thrusts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Thrust I<\/strong> activities consist\u00a0of observing and recording animal and human spatial awareness and navigation capabilities, correlating\u00a0these with neuronal activity, and developing explanatory\/predictive computational models.\u00a0Experiments will involve rodents, ants, and humans. Human studies will use non-invasive functional\u00a0Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) recordings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thrust II<\/strong> will develop neurobiologically-inspired methods for perception to enable goal-directed\u00a0navigation. It will incorporate semantic representations, control actions to enhance perception\u00a0(e.g., vision angle), metrics of information gain, detecting changes in the environment, and visual\u00a0place perception. A key output of this thrust will be a suite of perceptive features to be used for\u00a0developing autonomous navigation capabilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thrust III<\/strong> will develop next-generation AV capabilities via unified knowledge representation,\u00a0control, and learning strategies. The research will use features from Thrust II, determine how\u00a0to represent the environment and past experiences, develop methods to extract navigation control\u00a0policies from animal and human observations, and optimize these policies to achieve autonomous\u00a0goal-directed navigation in new settings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thrust IV<\/strong> will leverage a plethora of experimental testbeds at participating institutions to design\u00a0experiments that match animal\/human experiments under Thrust I. The purpose is to test the\u00a0effectiveness and efficiency of methods developed under the project in laboratory and real-world\u00a0settings.
