The article describes the CDC\u2019s response to a commentary co-authored by\u00a0Joanna Almeida, Associate Professor of Social Work at Simmons University, and\u00a0our colleague Candice Belanoff, Clinical Associate Professor of CHS. The commentary, published last spring in\u00a0<em>Maternal and Child Health Journal<\/em> (MCH), called for the CDC to nationally include\u00a0surveillance of racial discrimination through the\u00a0Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS).\u00a0This initiative would provide data to measure and assess the effect of racial discrimination on maternal and child health. Belanoff says of the call to action: \u201cHaving a racism measure on the PRAMS data would allow us to dig into the reasons behind the variation in preterm birth we observed among Black birthing parents in MA\u00a0in a recent study we conducted.\u00a0Adjusting for the usual suspected confounders\u2014such as maternal morbidities and indicators of socioeconomic position\u2014didn\u2019t make a ton of difference in the end.
