Content<\/td>\nThis document is a manual for divination using sand, a popular form of foretelling in Mandinka communities. It consists of ten sections, each of which contains symbols that correspond to important figures, including Y\u016bsuf (Joseph), \u0100dama (Adam), M\u016bs\u0101 (Moises), and Idr\u012bs (Enoch).<\/span> Each sign can be used to interpret the fortune of a petitioner, and the manual also indicates which kinds of offerings must be made to whom and on which days. The manual includes illustrations to help the diviner interpret the signs in the sand. It indicates the kinds of relationships between petitioners and Mandinka marabouts (spiritual leaders\/healers), and illustrates the kinds of worries, desires and goals that weighed on petitioners\u2019 minds during this time period. <\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
