Content<\/td>\nThis one-page manuscript is an undated letter addressed to a prominent Islamic cleric in Kano, known as Malam Lawan \u0198alarawi, who died in December 1999. The letter concerns <\/span>the naming ceremony of the author’s new-born baby boy and also whether it is allowed to pray behind someone who practices <\/span>qab<\/span><\/i>\u1e0du<\/span><\/i> (holding hands to the chest during prayers). The writer beg<\/span>ins and ends with a prayer. The author asked about, among other things, how to perform the ritual naming ceremony for a child born during a war. This manuscript is an example of how Hausa people utilize Ajami for personal correspondence. It exemplifies how\u00a0 people shared knowledge and engaged in intellectual discussions in Muslim West Africa. <\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
